Are smart pots worth the extra $?

I've been using them for a while now, I can't tell you all kinds of scientific stuff but plants in regular pots and plants in the same size smart pots, the smart pots always get bigger and healthier.

I flip mine inside out and run them through the wash. I just pull whatever stuck roots I can and most seem to come out in the wash. I haven't had a problem so far but I think the roots getting stuck is a problem for some people.

I'm on my first run with smart pots. I really like them so far. The real proof will be when the harvest is in and I get to break up the root ball.
Think of it this way, a five gallon smart pot is less than $5. That's the equivalent of what, a third of a gram. If you think it will do more than that you've earned your money back and then some.

landscaping fabric? The black plastic stuff they put down? No. It's cloth. This is taken from their website. google is your friend.
Smart Pots are manufactured out of a custom, non-woven, polypropylene material. Roots grown in a Smart Pot come in contact with the fuzzy, fabric inner wall of the bag and penetrate or grow into the fabric. The bag's tough fabric prevents the root's continued longitudinal growth, in effect pruning it, causing the root to develop masses of lateral fibrous roots. Upon comparison, root systems that developed in a Smart Pot have a much greater mass or volume then those found in hard-sided containers. Plants grown in Smart Pots have root balls that contain many more roots then found in a hard-sided container of similar size .

no not the plastic you use landscaping plastic for rocks but you use landscaping fabric for mulch. yeah that sounds like landscaping fabric one side is fuzzier than the other. Smart pots seem like a pretty good deal for the price but I already have access to lots of the fabric. Seems like I could make one in like 5 minutes

Basically, it's a fabric pot that's supposed to have better air circulation which makes the plant stronger and grow faster.

They are nothing like the burlap sacks we use for landscaping, Smart Pots are far less porus. I don't know if that's what you are referring to but I wouldn't use one of the burlaps for a plant.
