Hydro or Soil: which "TASTE" the best.. No really?

ok, I have read, and read, and read, an read some more. I got tired of reading stuff I googled because it was not entirely relevant. I have opened this thread not to start a argument, nor to debate which is "Better" overall. I have not smoked, nor grown nearly enough to be able to tell the difference. That being said, If anyone is out there has grown, and smoked both types (hopefully of the same strain) and could comment about the "taste" more than anything maybe it will help me choose which way I want to grow.

I have a "Strawberry haze" that Im interested in getting the "Best flavor" out of. Yet, I am confused because of several articles after googling that come up almost a wash, there are several people on several different websites/forums that argue one way or the other but most them seem to be biased due to them growing one way or another. I am hoping that this forum will not become a debate of which is a "better grow" but which is better tasting, And if one truly does taste better, how much better? what did (X) grown bud taste like over (Y) grown bud?

You aren't going to get anything better than opinions. Even if someone had done such a test, taste is still an opinion and can't be measured by a tastemeter. I doubt many can even tell the difference between the two let alone which is better, I know I couldn't.

For what it is worth though, people generally say soil tastes better, or they taste the same - I haven't heard anyone say hydro tastes the best but I'm sure some people do think that

"Do plants grown using hydroponics taste better than plants grown in soil?
Quite often this is the case because the plants grown utilizing hydroponics have all the essential nutrients readily available to the plant. In soil the important micro nutrients are often locked away in the soil where the plants cannot take full advantage of these minerals. That is why hydroponics is superior because the grower has complete control over what minerals the plants are feeding on and in what quantities. This advantage over soil often produces produce that is far superior in taste, color, size, and nutritional value." LINK

sites like this say one thing, and others say just what you said. So, I am just curious if anyone can Honestly "taste" the difference, or if its all in our heads.

i've tasted some fine tasting bud grown about every way there is to grow. i think the tastier bud comes from genitics and grow conditions, not the grow medium...

I grow the same strains in dirt and in hydro and to be honest, if I've grown and cured them properly, I could never tell you which one is which.

Good question Dawg. I wouldn't put nanners in anything but I do plan on curing my Super Lemon Haze with some lemon rind in the jar. I heard that it picks up the flavor or smell. They did say not to use nanners.

So then you would say that given "ideal" conditions for either... then the taste is more or less speculative as to which "Taste" better?

The reason I ask is because I have some t5s for vegging and Im trying to figure out If i should go with the Hydro to pick up the 20-30% faster veg time since I don't have a MH. however, I don't want to sacrifice "Taste" for "speed". in the end the overall product isn't worth the loss of quality at least not for a me.

I wonder if you created your own mulch with lot's of banana peels or blueberries, would the strain you grow in them like Banana Kush or Blueberry would taste more like that? I'm sure that would change the pH and most likely the potassium.

Anyone ever try this stuff?

Bud Candy...

I too have wondered this, I have gone so far as to contemplate that maybe not the fruit itself but as to what may happen If i where to make a "Fruit Juice coctail" for plants, you know take a bunch of berries hit em real hard with a juicer, then adjust the PH of the juice according and use the juice for my "flush" period... but I don't know.. mmm but now this has me wondering....

What I'm saying is that I believe taste has more to do with the cure than what method was used to grow the product to begin with. Two of my buds side-by-side (dirt and hydro) will have a taste so similar that you couldn't tell which one is which. That being said, I'm not one that thinks bud has much of a flavor other than earth and spice. It's always pleasant and smooth, but I'm skeptical when people claim they taste berries or mango or whatever, but that's beside the point.

I just happened to remember something they have recently found out about plants. Plants do *not* uptake organic compounds, only inorganic. Therefore, the juices and other goodies would not be taken up. I'm still going to cure some of my SLH with some lemon rind.

ok well here is a hell of a question for you guyz. I have done "soil" before and I use FFOF, however but i have been considering using Hydro as a set up and I was thinking of using (dont shoot) AN Iguana juice Grow for my veg. Yet for some reason I am pulled to the botnicare Pure Blend Pro series. ( I imagine fertz are fertz no matter what the labeling says) I am not sure If AN I.J. will be worth the 30-40 bucks over the PBP for like 20. Like I said. I want the best quality as fast as i can get it (dont we all) that being said I would be willing to us AN over PBP but I want to know that the IJ does what all the marketing says rather than buying into it and find out its just hype.

Anyone care to chime in about the 2 and how they would effect over all quality/taste ?

LittleJohn, I'll be happy to chime in. I wasted about $450 on AN nutes, snake oil and rocket fuel. I've grown in soil, and I'm currently on my second grow with Dutch Master hydro nutes. Using AN is like pissing in your pants in a dark suit; you get a warm feeling but nobody notices. You're right about the Botanica line; they will grow just as good as the AN line. Keep the change bro.

If taste is the only determining factor, I would say soil and organics all the way. I grow in Coco using nutrients (non-organic) and I will say that I produce INCREDIBLE bud.. That being said, when I have grown in Soil using all organics, the taste was WAY better than using hydro. The yield was almost 40% less that way, but it did taste incredible... Yields are to low though...
