Unconvinced by that - algae will grow in distilled water if it is kept badly - in bright light, for instance - unconnected with the presence of nutes.

That's true. Algae are plants and consume the same types of nutrients as our fav. It was just a thought. I'm sure you're right. It would take a looooooooong time for algae to eat up enough nutes to make a difference IMO.:blsmoke:
