yeah ? I've heard this crap before. Some old school loudmouth tryin' to tell the the newbies to buy a 400 watt metal halide yard light from Home Depot for veging. Pops stuck a picture of his seedlings after 2 weeks under it. I countered with a picture of mine same age under a 15 watt 6500 K cfl. Mine were the same node count, shorter with deep blue green thick leaves. Never seen or heard from the old timer again.

I have only used CFL's one time, and only for vegging. I used an old light bar made for a 60's era home movie camera that was intended to be used with four 90-watt halogen bulbs. I put a Y splitter into each socket so it would then hold 8 CFLs. I used 26 watt, 6500K, 1600 lumen CFLs. I attached the light bar to an old batwing reflector (yes, not exactly the bee's knees) and used polished thin aluminum to extend the sides of the batwing reflector down to just above the top of the pots so all four plants were fully inside close reflective material.
The growth was good, but it was slower than when I used my 400-watt HID with a 6500K MH bulb. The nodal spacing was tight, but not as tight as when I used my 400-watt HID with a 6500K MH bulb. Both times it was with the same strain, one of the few mostly indica strains I will grow, Sagarmatha Seeds Mangolian Indica, so it was not like a comparison between two different strains or done in two different locations which would mean it would have been done under different overall conditions, and not by two different people who might possibly not have equal skills or might possibly not use as high of quality products in each use.
Possibly there was some reason for the slower growth and nodal spacing that was not as tight as when I grew the same strain using my 400-watt HID with a 6500K MH bulb that I have not thought of ... but in my one comparative test the eight 26 watt 6500K 1600 lumen CFLs with four plants evenly spaced with two CFLs slightly above and slightly to the side of each plant came in second in both speed of growth and quality of growth to my 400-watt HID using a 6500K MH bulb.
Maybe in a second or a third comparative test the CFLs might do better, but in the one comparative test they did not do well enough for me to care to give them another try.
Maybe some people know how to get more out of one 15 watt 6500K CFL than I know how to get out of eight 26 watt 6500K 1600 lumen CFL bulbs, but after my one attempt I see no reason to play around with household lighting bulbs, of any Kelvin rating, ever again, when I have my 400-watt HID that proved to me that it outperforms pigtail CFL household lighting bulbs.
But to each their own.
