I'm a noob

So apparently I was doing my entire grow wrong. So I decided to try it again.

First I'm ordering seeds, not using bag seeds. I think I'm going to use nirvana, but I need suggestions, something easy to grow, doesn't smell a lot, and is all around a good first grow.
Would also like to know what you consider is better, having a mother plant or starting from seeds everytime

Next, light, I'm going to use cfl bulbs, but I have no idea what strength I need, I know to pay attention to only the actual watts not incandescent equivalent, but still I need to know how many watts.
I also need to know what part of the spectrum, like 6500k?

Last I need to know what type, if any, fertilizer people prefer.

Everything else I think I have down, but I doubt it, so I'll probably come back to ask more questions when something happens.

Newbie growers:

If you're new to the wonderful world of weed growing, you will love Nirvana! At unbeatable prices, we offer a selection of easy-to-grow quality cannabis strains to help you attain the grow of your dreams! Our all-round beginner-friendly strain with a nice mix of Indica and Sativa qualities is AK-48. This strain is really easy to grow and try out new techniques (such as super cropping or SCROG) on. If you're a beginner growing outdoors, we recommend you try Kaya Gold. This 100% feminized variety will yield only top-notch female cannabis plants. Kaya will flourish in most any climate, is hardy, mould-resistant and offers a nice spicy high. For indoor growers with limited experience, we offer a surprise value pack of five different indoor strains called Indoor Mix. This is the perfect choice if you'd like to try several varieties without breaking the bank, and it also comes in a completely feminized version, eliminating the need to cull male plants. For newbie growers who'd like the special qualities of an outdoor strain in their grow room, we've developed Urban Poison, our indoor version of the famed Durban Poison. Lastly, Blue Mystic is a good strain for cautious beginners because it maintains a relatively neutral smell throughout the flowering period. Seed suggestions from me will be Sannie's Shop. I just got my 1st order from them and it took 10 days from ordering to delivery in the PAC NW. As far as seed or vegging a Mom plant, go with the veg every single time but remember that most successful growers can use up to 100 or even 1000 plants from seed before they find that 1 true mother plant. If you are using a package of 10 seeds then germ all of them and hope for a 100% germ rate, weed out your males by cloning for sex & use the best 1 or 2 female plants out of the 10 seeds to be your Mom plants for future harvests. If you can find someone with a great strain & has a Mom plant on hand already, ask them to give you a clone to make your own Mom plant with. Perpetual harvests are just a better road to travel overall instead of using seeds each & every time. You know what genetics you are working with & the phenotypes that you are ending up with after you go through flowering.

Lighting = 60watts per square foot. If you have a 5x5 grow space then you are working with 25sq feet, 25sq ft x 60 watts of light = 1500 watts. A lot of people have had nominal success with CFL's but I use HPS bulbs in favor of CFL's personally. If I recall 6500k is what you want to use for your vegetative growing then switch it up to 2700k for flowering. I like to use the T5 HO bulbs myself but if you're on a budget, CFL's are a cheap & effective option. :)

For nutrients that is like the question of all questions. Many people swear by General Hydroponics for hydro growing, other people think that Advanced Nutrients is the Bees Knees, I've dabbled in Fox Farm that other people love & yet there are a ton of other opinions out there. What you are looking for is cheap & effective for the strain you are trying to grow. Is your strain a heavy feeder or is it going to yellow & wilt when you look at it funny with nutrients in your hand? This is where keeping a grow journal comes into play. Chart & write everything down so you don't forget the mistakes & successes that you made during your grows!

another option to consider is you can do clones of clones and not keep a mother, its simple, take your first plants and veg them about 4-5 weeks, at about 4 weeks take 2-4 clones off each plant, carefully make which clones are from which plant so you can kill any clones from male or hermie plants, now take your first generation and put them into the flowering area, by the time generation 1 is done generation 2 will be more than ready to have 2-4 clones cut from it and put into flowering, when generation 2 gets done you then take generation 3 and take off 2-4 clones and put generation 3 into flower, when they are done generation 3 will be ready to have 2-4 clones cut and flowering to begin and so on...well, you get what im the picture.(if you have any questions let me know).
i would not go under 120-150 watts per square foot for flowering, preferbley more like 200-250, if your going to grow w/ cfls and you want to compete with hps you need to go big, colas thicker than your forearm or bigger are always nice to have. surround the plants with lighting so the plants getting bathed in light from top to bottom. you want a mixed spectrum, cannabis has 2 types of chloroplast, one that interacts with the red wavelength side of the spectrum and one that interacts with the blue wavelength side of the spectrum, using only one spectrum hurts your plants ability to reach its potential maximum energy output. i use fox farms trio for ferts myself.
