I Rub the Leafs to See If My Plants Need Water. Anyone Else?

Simply put i rub a few leafs to determine if i need to water. if they feel thin like paper i give them a water but if not i let them be and it works great for me.

takes a while to get the feel but i think its better than the weighing of pots method(dry vs wet)

because i started trying this with vegetables and all plants have different feels some are naturally thiner then others

oh why is it better

because some times you can have a pot to large for smaller plants and if you do wet/dry weights you may over water

youve got a good example there but thats under a specific scenario where errors have already been made, hows it better than the lift method under normal conditions though?

I dont do any of the above ... I just stick my big ole finger right in that shit to see if the bottom is getting dryish ... If it is.. I water ... If it's still moist ... I dont . I see no need in getting too complicated with such things - tbh I kinda like playing in the dirt .. I'm just a dirty old man like that

u cant stick ur finger in a 5 gallon pot & know when to water, its just not that easy & it is not accurate.

I can tell either by the droopy leaves, and the weight of my pots. I've gotten very used to it over time. It's not just weight it's the feel as well.

if the first 3 inches "bout your fingerlength unless your a basketball star or a little person" are dry in a 5 gall bucket, it's time to give em a drink IMO..... p.s. i usually do the dirty finger method as well, plants seem to not have no objections whatsoever

It is kind of *busy* isn't it?

For watering, I either just look at the plants, or, after many years of doing this, just tip the pots a bit. Sort of a refined weight thing. I'm too old to be picking up 5 gal containers. A little push will work.

lol...I grow in totes and can almost reach the bottom of them - If I used 5 gal. buckets I can see where that wouldnt work as well .. and no its not the most accurate system - but I'm just a small ghetto grower makin some stash - so I keep it pretty simple where ever I can . Not to oversimplify by anymeans ... but I seem to do pretty well without all the " what I should do's " ... theres seems to be a whole lot of people just restating what they have read in post after post - then throw stuff out there like they have a clue if its factual or not just to sound credible . This is a good example though of what works for me may not even be feesable for anothers set up .. or maby I do just overslimplify things ..

You dont have to weigh your pots on a scale. you can simply pick them up and if their too heavy the soil is hydrated. also most indoor soiless or soil turns black dark brown to lighter tan when the top dries.

Just pick up your pot and if its light water it.

weighing the pots its not without its flaws...but I do think its the best way, never paid attention to feeling the leaves, ill give it a shot thanks

I feel the leaves also. I noticed it last year on my first grow. since I only grow 2-3 at a time, they tend to get hrs of attn a day after the caterpillar incident and after a few weeks of this, I came to the same conclusion.
