When Should I Flower?

I have two plants that are significantly bigger than all my other plants and Im having trouble keeping the lights low enough to the smaller plants without burning the big ones. I figure I should just flower the bigger ones and get them out of my grow area cause I don't wanna murder them. Can I flower anytime or is there a specific age? Please give advice.

u can flower anytime u want.some people grow 12/12 from seed. however u could just tie down your taller plants it might seem like a hassle to some but its sooooooo easy! and tying them down will encourage better growth.

you should mother one of those fast growing plants and clone it to get a bunch of fast growing plants

For most part figure they will grow 1.5x their height when put into flower. (depending on strain lighting etc... what I have learned is 1-2x height)
I have read many places that at minimum you want the plant to have at least 4 nodes before putting in flowering.
I usually wait till around 10-12" tall and most of the time I am looking at 6 nodes on average. For instance I just put 8 plants into flowering 3 days ago, 6 were 10"-12" 2 were only about 8" presently the tallest one is now 18" tall and it was not the tallest before putting into flowering.

I read in another post on this site with someone who had the same problem just recently. Someone said you can just keep the lights at the height of the large ones and use books to raise the short ones up to the light. I'm just starting my first grow, but seems like it would work to me.

That's what I did at first. But now, I am running out of shit to stack. Haha. I don't want to just throw anything under there cause I don't want some stuff to get wet

you can flower them anywhere from 16 days old to 8 or 9 weeks old but keep in mind theyll double or sometimes triple in size when you flip to 12 12

Everything has to do with your setup. Lights - If using CFL's or floro tubes then the canopy must remain as even as possible, if using HID the light has more penetration and depending on the wattage this depth will vary.
Plants - If you haven't topped & are just letting the plant run wild it will be less productive to tie the main cola down, unless you keep in down and let it grow horz. If topped just pull the main arms down (I don't think this is where you are). Another technique if not topped is to "Tip the top" (this is only used during the stretch after the flip) If you bend the newest growth over 90 degrees, tie it with a piece of string, wire whatever, and leave it that way for a couple of days then release, it will stunt the main stock stretch & encourage the lower arms to reach the same height as the main stock.

There are many ways to even out your canopy do some reading here and apply to your conditions.

I hear a lot of people say the plants double in height for flowering but what i find is that when the first flowers start to show through then the plant dosen't get much taller. Flower whenever, there is no limit but if the plants not ready it won't flower till it is. Normally alternate branches mean my plant will start to flower, i get these at about four weeks.

Well I have topped one of my bigger plants that I'm thinking about flowering. And I'm running out of room fast in my grow area. Can the plants be pretty close together or do they need some space. Cause leaves are starting to overlap.

Can be close together but as long as the light dosen't stop penetrating down to the lower leaves. Flower the topped one now might be a good idea.

For compact grow rooms you want short plants with four or more main branches and form a canopy of buds.

Who can say apart from you, if its got some branches then yes, topping makes lots of buds rather than one main one, flower now if it is already big and low height issues with grow room.

I think i know what you mean and where you are up to, at what internode did you top the plant at? By chutes do you mean shoots? Pics would just help growers give you a straight yes or no answer. Let the shoots grow a little before flowering, they will still grow for a week or two when you switch to 12/12. If its a height issue these young shoots will be supple and bendable so train the top ones sideways with string and allow the one underneath to grow up to the same height. I have some pics of a plant i topped and how much growth you can expect when flowering it, look at my link, pics are at the top and tell me if yours looks similar to mine, thanks and here the link -

Looking back on this topping thread brings back memories, this is right at the start of a lot of pH issues i have just got over, taken a long time to learn to pH the soil right with lime and how to read runoff etc. My flower room looked amazing back then, just starting to get her back looking good now, reduced some of the stretch too! God they were bad times after these pics! If anything becoming a gardener has taught me patience if nothing else, very annoying indeed as all i wanted was to grow some good plants!lol!

And yes Idk why I put chutes. The two new shoots are only like an inch or so tall. They've still got a while. And I did it above the sixth node.
