cfls are perfectly ine lights keep growing dont let them think your cfl's wont work we have to manage but we should find hps for our flowers you know they would want it too lol
GK- since it would take a lot of cfls to flower... how long should u veg and flower w/ cfls. or should u veg for a longer time and flower a shorter time??
you forgot to factor in venting that heat out with an aircooled reflector or cool tubeyea right.. I checked online, and the cheapest 600 watt HPS I can get is like 300-400$(ballast, reflector hood, bulb, and socket) you can get 10 32 watt CFL's for about 50$, which is 320 watts 640 watts for just 100$.. they use so much less electricity, and can be confined to a very small space. Cfl's, may make your grow room a little crowded, because you need som many of them, yet they are definatly the way to grow. I mean if you have the money, then go for the all out HPS lamp, but on a budget, CFL's are they way to go.
Dear Knowm,hey six.. when USING cfls, i prefer a very short veg time.. just about 3-6 nodes.. which usually takes about 12-16 days of veg time.. and then I flower...
here is a picture of a plant that was flowered at 15 days...

I'm personally using a single 250watt CFL with closed end reflector in a home made flood and drain system growing 7 THC Bomb with coco hydro nutrients set at 500 ppm, nutrient reservoir set at 24 degrees C, PH of 5.8 and after 10days growth from seed they are 3 inches tall with 6/8 set of leaves each as close as they can get. I have grown with hps mh and mv but never achieved such quick perfectly formed vegging. They are now 3 days into 12/12 and 15 days old- personally I would reccomend Cfl all the way!

The grow started with one 42 watt and by DAY one of flowering the grow had 8 - 42 watt CFLs.... surrounding 3 plants...

I have read more "expert" light testimony on the internet than I care to think about. But, the proof is in the results. So, three plants translates to about three square feet. Your eight bulbs are more or less evenly spaced. Production was good. Enough said.mr. bird...
I am no expert.. but an expert once told me that LUMENs can not be added up.. The "nature" (a word I use when I have no idea what I am talking about) of lumes is such that the largest LUMEN output of any particular bulb is the LUMEN max of that GROW.
so, as I recall, the lumen output of a 42 watt cfl was 2600 or 2700 lumes... and when all the lumens are added up, it is still just 2600 or 2700 lumens.
I am pretty sure there is an explanation of this on the internet somewhere...
it is like having being on a tandom bike... if one person is spinning the crank at 10 revolutions a minute and another person is added... and the revolutions are kept at 10 revolutions per minute.. the speed of the bike does not increase...

I am experimenting with toplight T-8's and 65 Watt mega CFLs on a board, placed between rows of planters. So the result is lighting from both the top and side of the plants. I like CFLs, but they can burn plants if you are not careful. But this may work.

If instead of climbing on a tandem bike they climb on to two sperate bikes and pedal they might not go faster, they will cover twice the distance if you get my drift. I luv you man. VV

IT IS STILL NOT PERFECT - not even close.. the plants on the far right need at least 1 more CFL...
these lights are great at 1 inch... but beyond 1 inch they start LOOSING lumens.... it is important to give the leaves as much light as possible.. ALL THE LEAVES... low branches, side branches, top branches.. etc
this is another reason it is important to flower early... when using CFLS...
it is not practical to grow big plants with CFLS because it could easily take 40 CFLs to cover a 5 foot pant... LOL
Which types of plants(seeds) do you suggest that don't grow so high but can gain lots of yieldage???
great question.. I don't really have the answer...
I would definitely suggest sticking with an indica...
but heres the problem... most plants will double or triple in size when you switch them from veg (18+ hours of light) to flower (12 hours of uninterrupted of darkness every 24 hours ) cycles..
90% of this growth spurt takes place in the first 3 weeks of flowering... (flowering begins when YOU switch the lights cycle.... )
NOW... if you flower a p[lant that is only 5 inches tall.. that has been vegging for 15 days and only has 4 nodes, you;d think that it would grow max, 15 inches.. BUT, from what have seen...it actually will grow just as big as a plant that was flowered at 10 inches tall.. they will both finish around 25 inches...
I have not grown every strain. NOT even 1% of the strains....
I only have this info to give you.....
maybe somebody knows a high yielding strain that can be kept under 20 inches without training..
TRAINING is always an option..
