I was listening to the radio and thought about how public schools do this

Children are being treated more and more like mini-adults. Teaching them simplified versions of number theory in elementary school. The child's mind can't handle that sort of thing. We are brainwashing and doing mind control on our future. They should be playing. There shouldn't have to be a revolution like in the video. It's do this because I said so. It was bad enough when I had to go through it 28 years ago. I shouldn't have had to then either. Children should be encouraged to question why. Not scolded and told to shut up. Nor this either:

Even though his speech is fake, the words are true. They call the regular class College Prep. What if you are smart and can handle Prep level but don't want to go to college? That's fake to shove you need college too. If you cheat, that's supposed be bad. But most people cheat and lie to get ahead. If your boss tells you to lie and you don't, you're fired. So that ethic is a disservice if they're teaching to get ahead, of course that's not the point. The point of it all is to be a slave of the system. No wonder people are so unsatisfied and as a result form those occupy groups.

The real solution is to think for yourself and throw away all the useless garbage you were lied to about. Only then can you be happy. I may not be the most successful person, but I broke free and healed myself. I'm now happy and improve with every day. Happyness doesn't come from the external like the occupy seem to think, it comes from the internal inside yourself. Even a perfect world won't make you happy if you can't find it yourself.

This can only be helped and not given. You can help your children and not rely on others to show your children the way. Many seem to think the public school system is supposed to do it for you. That's the ultimate problem, not social inequality.

School isn't so much about educating the children as it is about teaching children to conform. They don't give kids a classical education anymore. They don't let the smart kids excel anymore, they make them stay behind with the regular kids and stunt their mental growth. Logical thought is not taught, they spend about 10 minutes going over the constitution in 12 years of public school. They teach them just enough to get some job so that they become another cog in the machine.

the two main functions of school (besides education) are socialization and conformity.

as much as a bunch of stoners may be tempted to say "fuck conformity", it is a critical trait to have if you want to have any type of success. ditto socialization.

false. patently false.

i went to school with children that skipped grades. i personally attended "strive" as a grade schooler, an extra-curricular program that all the smart kids went to. AP classes are available in high school for advanced children (i did those as well). do well enough in your AP classes and you can test out of your 101 classes in college and go straight to the advanced stuff.

i'm SURE that you know this, too.

Logical thought is not taught...
it is a shame that most high schools do not offer philosophy (where logic gets taught), but it is available in every college.

... they spend about 10 minutes going over the constitution in 12 years of public school.
again, patently false.

we spent a semester on the constitution in AP government. an entire semester.

They teach them just enough to get some job so that they become another cog in the machine.
that is where most people will end up. not everyone can be a rocket scientist or neurosurgeon, who would scrub the toilets?

those who truly utilize their education will succeed whether they have to conform or not. look at bill gates. hell, look at me. i dropped out of college 5 classes short of a degree in either math, spanish, or philosophy. i learned enough to know i was no longer learning (plus, the work and pay were really good at the time and i had no idea a recession was soon to hit).

even though i am a lowly cannabis grower, i still apply my education everyday in one way or another.

i mean, could you imagine me as an actuary? that is the path i was going when i dropped out. i still use actuarial concepts very often.

You just gave me like 6 great examples of anecdotal evidence, which I appreciate, but have you looked at what your kids are learning in school?

there were AP classes when i went to school too, in fact i skipped a grade school grade and took some of those AP classes in High School. No child left behind changed many things.

Actuarial Science is actually one of the few College Majors that has lots of potential job growth.

What are the odds of being hit by lightning on seven separate occasions?

anecdotal? these are all facts.

and the lightning question requires conditional probability to figure out, which is beyond me at this point.

Only on September 17th, and it isn't schools teaching government we are talking about, we are talking about the US Constitution, which isn't government. BTW that law was passed in 2004, pretty recent.

I really wish you would take some remedial reading comprehension class or maybe get someone to explain these posts to you, you never actually understand what the debates are about.

I don't know with your problem with knowledge is but i enjoy learning things. If i don't constantly research and read into things my life feels monotonous.

So we got conservative types claiming that schools are meant to indoctrinate, to knock down all the high standing nails, conformity and regimentation. And yet, all I hear from conservatives is the outrageous teaching behavior of the "liberal" professors. We hear conservatives insisting that we reintroduce prayer in schools, that we take sex education out of those same schools, they want certain books removed, they want history rewritten, they insist that religious fairy tales be taught alongside legitimate scientific fundamentals and then somewhere in this obvious battle for the minds of our young they claim they want children to be able to "think for themselves" No, conservatives do not want children to think for themselves, they simply want to inclulcate a different sort of agenda than is currently being indoctrinated.

Beyond even that, we see the same old hack "things were better way back when". Yes, when I was young they taught civics - they taught "logic", they taught "history", but now they don't, right? So what? It isn't about schools and it has never been about schools, it is about curiosity. Today a curious child can learn anything he wishes as quickly as he wishes to do so using the very media upon which I now type. Curiosity, the bane of conservativism, it's ultimate enemy. Conservativism is the religion of certitude and curiosity its satan itself. Want legions of little robots with little robot minds? Teach conservativism.

Then why even have schools?

Curiosity is the Bane of conservatives? Do you really know what you are talking about, or do you just normally go about making grand assumptions? That has to be one of the more inane comments uttered in recent history.

Oh I know it upsets conservatives to acknowlege this but we can go to a single point of contention and see conservative shunning of curiosity in action. Not all conservatives, but a large host of them would much rather answer all questions with a single answer "God did it". Don't bother looking for real answers because the final refrain is "God did it". Conservatives are attempting to re-write history, they, through their mouthpiece FOX are even trying to re-write the Constitution itself - I saw something today about title 28 of the Constitution regarding Kagan and recusal. http://mediamatters.org/blog/201111160010?frontpage

don't bother with the writting in the piece it doesn't matter, the video does. As I said, Conservatives do not endear themselves to doubt, even when it is advised.

Plenty of conservatives that don't believe in God.

Really?
Which one of them is running for office
Good point. I would say Ron Paul is as close as you're gonna get. He may have beliefs, but he seems to leave them at the door, for the most part. Of course the same can be said of most of the Dems over the last couple elections. It seems you have to pay lip service to the almighty if you want to get elected to any higher office in this country.

To the point above, there are plenty of us fiscal conservatives that want nothing to do with the religious right. I'd consider officially becoming a libertarian, but their candidates always seem a bit kooky.

We have intelligent people on both sides of the issue making excellent points.
The constitution was designed to keep an even keel and it did for many years. However the past 100 years have taken a hard turn to the left. Now we are argueing from the far left side of what was once the divide.

And as we move further away from civil norms, society becomes more decadent and more depraved. We see it every day yet some are blind and insist on jumping into the abyss.

.

Here we are again, reframing the past so that it makes the present seem more... depraved and decadent. Martin Luther King had a serious problem with the "civil norms" of 100 years ago, he WANTED us to make a left turn because that was where civil liberties for the majority of us resided. Question women as to their particular situation 100 years ago and see that it wasn't the warm fuzzy place the right seem to idolize over this current..civil norm.
