lol customer rating on this bulb

"I purchased this bulb to grow vegetables indoors and it works great. It's been on an outlet timer with an eighteen on six off cycle for about two months and it's still going strong. The bulb gets hot to the touch but not hot enough to burn the plants at five inches away. The plants are flourishing and the bulb is obviously a key factor."

yeah vegtables.....mmmmmhmmmmm. i should tell the dude that 2700k is not for Veggatative growth LOL

I would recommend a larger number of smaller bulbs than fewer larger bulbs. You get much stronger more even light dispersal and can run more wattage for the same price.

Say you purchased 3 of these 36" 6 bulb fixtures for $13 each (look around you can probably find the same fixture for $6) http://shop.ferguson.com/product/Craftmade-CRM13036-Chrome-263264?N=102+214+3000650&cid=ga_falllt11_bathroomvanitylights&gclid=CLvY3eaNwawCFQNShwodbztWrg

Look for 23-26w CFLs at the dollar store or on sale - you should be able to find them for $0.25-1 a piece. For $60 you would get 400+w of CFL and it would be nice and evenly spaced over a 3x3' area (perfect for a scrog). You would also be able to stagger different spectrum bulbs to maintain the ideal 3:1 ratio.

Also keep in mind CFL efficiency; CFLs are most efficient lumen/w at 45w. The further you get away from 45w the less efficient the bulbs are - 23w and 68w bulbs are about the same as each other and just a bit less efficient than the 45 an 48w bulbs, the huge bulbs and tiny tiny bulbs are much much less efficient.

In short you will be providing alot more light to the plants by using separate smaller bulbs placed closer to all the parts of the plant then just a couple larger bulbs close to parts of the plant but far from other parts of the plant (keep in mind anything over 4" from a CFL is pretty far).

my area is only 11x14 Inches 4 bulbs will be alot in such a small space.

thanks for the info on the degrading, ill look for some 45 watt ones and go with that should be a little bit cheaper anyways.

i wont be able to fit a 36 in fixture into my space.

Got bored. x2 105w 6200lumen vs 23w 1000lumen according to my lighting software.

Smaller bulbs ____________ _______________________Larger bulbs

Even with a HUGE hood for each bulb - which would definitely put you over on the budget.

Let me know if you want me to get rid of all of these pictures.

thanks Gas, im not trying to argue with you or debate anything but i really only have room for 2 more lights. as much as i would like to load that bitch up with a dozen lights i just cant.

so my question is. if only adding 2 more light (4 lights total to a 11x14 area) would i be better off with 45 watt or 100 watt?

If you mounted those bathroom vanity lights to a sheet of plywood they would take up just as much vertical space as the two larger bulbs.

You would be better off with 4 45w bulbs than 2 105w bulbs. If you can only put two bulbs then get the highest wattage you can - it's less efficient light but it's still more of it.

11x14 inches? Oh... In a space that small and with the longer straight high wattage CLFs I would really recommend hanging them vertically and growing lollipops with the bulbs hanging parallel to the colas. It is going to be really really hard to get a good scrog in such tight conditions. Maybe just top once and then trim for 4 main tops - anything over 4 tops is going to be way overcrowded.

i was going to try for around 12 tops. 4 tops just seems like its not trying to push the limits of my space enough and thats the main idea.

but your more than welcome to say "Told ya so" when i dont succeed :)

thanks for the support :). i really want to fill up that SCROG screen as much as possible for maximum yeild. I guess we will never find out what the limitations of the setup are unless we "Push it to the limit"

as always im open to any and all suggestions. i only plan on having 4 lights and so far the descision is 2x 26w 6500k and 2x ##?w 2700k. i wont be putting any more lights and im sticking with CFL so please dont suggest a HPS (not you Gas any new visitors)
as you stated earlier more lower wattage is better than less high watt but where i plan on only adding 2 more do you think i should go with highest wattage in my price range?

more update coming as soon as my laptop boots up.

What is your ventilation situation? Generally more light the better but I can't imagine say 2 250w CFLs in there - the heat would just be ridiculous and although the amout of light at the top would be super high I don't think it would be able to get to much of the plant matter and changes are you would just be wasting electricity. I would say go with x2 105w like you were thinking - even then you might have heat issues.

Update: as you can see im starting the get the next set of leaves ( 4 leaves in pic, 2 more are starting to develope in the center) so these little buggers are coming along nicely. there is no stretching so my light is close enough, dont really want to move it further away untill i have no choice because i want to keep them short then move the light away when i get down to my keeper plant and let it stretch through the SCROG screen.

could use some opinions here. i know they dont say to feed them untill 3rd or 4th set of "True leaves" and i think its only my second set starting to develop? i was thinking of mixing up a 1/10th strenth batch of tomato MG its a 18-18-21 fert and giving these little guys a really small dose tonight before lights out, i realize that the peat moss and perilite i am using have nutes in it already but im not noticing any signs of burn (nor deficiency) i did have a slight overwatering problem with one of the seedlings but it seems to be coming out of that quickly and i probally wont be feeding that particular seedling anything as i want it to dry out well and feeding wont help that process. anyways what you guys think, should i wait or should i only give it to a couple and see what happens before i do all of them? i think my impatience is talking more than my brain but hell im all about trying anything to get these guys gtg by wednesday, i really want to have 4 picked out by then and the rest sent out so i can modify my grow box to fit the second containers
IMG_2361.jpg
heres a pic of the box and the 4 containers, on wednesday i will choose 4 plants im going to vegg and trim/train for 2 weeks maybe more. im not sure how im going to sex them, i may use one of the tops i trim and clone it uned 12/12 till i can sex then dump any males i have to narrow down what i have to work with. probally once i sex them i will just go down to one plant and get it transplanted into final container and get it under the SCROG screen so i can start training it to gow up through. too many option......time to roll one :joint:

let me know what you think about the 1/10th strenth dosage of the 18-18-21 food

i have a small PC fan in the top of the box (there are a couple pics of it earlier in the thread.) right now i have it blowing air into the box to push air across the seedlings to help them strengthen their stalks. i can easily turn it around to suck heat out of the box .2x 250w CFL will cost more than a 400w HPS system so im not going to be considering that option anyways. i did look at the 105w CFL and they are in my price range. still a bit pricy but do able. right now the temps in my box are a little less than desired. probally 68-70f so a little more warmth would be good. i thought about placing a heating pad in there but didnt really follow through with it. they are growing fairly well with the current temps so i dont think they are bothered by the non tropical enviorment.

heres a couple more pics

i just found that humidity and temp gauge kicking around the house and they havent been in there verry long so the reading on them might not be accurate, hell i dont even know if the gauges are acurate.

The ferts probably aren't necessary and won't help much but at 1/10th strength they shouldn't do any major harm. Make sure you are truly diluting to 1/10th str - I always find it hard to dose accurately in small quantities so you might consider mixing up 1-5 gallons at a time even if you won't be using it.
