First Soil Grow - Sour Diesel - Medical Grow

Hi Guys, Just thought I'd start a grow log for my buddy's grow (I'm helping him)...

I brought some clippings down from Northern Cali... These are supposed to be one of the best Diesel strains everyone out there has seen... so I have high hopes for them, however, I'm not growing them... so we get to see what a beginner is going to do with a great strain...

Grow room setup... 1000w light with cooltube, carbon scrubber and fan...
We'll be doing 14 plants in about a 5x5 area...

Soil, Scotts Supersoil potting mix with 30% wood chips...

nutes... (that's a secret and rediculously easy powder recipe)
Feeding 2tbsp per 5 gallons water... feed every 2 days, water once a week to prevent nute buildup... no ph testing or anything else (ph comes out at is 6.5 and 1000ppm using my recipe)

First Things... We cloned them out... (obviousely) using an easycloner with same nutes ph'd to 5.6...)

I planted two of them fresh... the others were planted a day or two later... my buddy didn't water the pots enough and there was some burn/dryness... I think he potted them and then didn't even water them...

Here's the first week... rough week...LOL

as you can see the two I potted were looking ok... the others were a little dry and wilted... these are 1 gallon pots... I will be changeing them out later for 5 gallon buckets...

Week 2... End of week... I decided I needed to get over and see how he was doing...

I found out he got confused on which bucket he was mixing nutes in...LOL, so these were not getting any nutes for over a week... Starting to look yellow... on top f that... they were all very dry... however the two I started were still looking good... due to the fact that I made sure the previous week to water them heavy with nutes... I watered them with about 3 cups of water to soak the pots.... I took seperat pics of them so you can see how they look...

I got him all straightened out and he's feeding propperly... I'll try to get pics up as soon as I can get them...

Dude looks like your buddy got his hands full. Lucky for him you are there to help. I got a couple questions though...

How do you always get a 6.5 ph? I know a recipe is a recipe but how the he'll do you get your tap water to have a steady ph? From my experience, my water comes out at randomly between 5.6 to 8.5 ph. This can change every six hours. I even had it come out at 9.2 the other day, but very rare for it to be above 8.0. Looks like those plants on the bottom of the pictures are suffering hard. Feed them ph'd water until they recover man.

Also, how do you get clones to root in 1100 ppm water? Does it work well?

And why scotts mix? I looked up reviews for the soil and found countless cases of gnat infestations in their soil. Tell your friend to keep up on those for sure. All the other plants are looking great thought. How long do you plan on vegging them?

Hi, in socal, the tap comes out around 7ph... pretty much everywhere 25 miles around here it comes out at 7...

I always run 1000ppm on my cloner, they never yellow that way... you'll find out that they do much better cloneing with full nutes then they will without them... as long as you keep it ph'd right you'll never see burn...

the nutes are dirt cheap... Lab grade chemicals (nothing out of the ordinary though) the mix for veg would be aprox 17-10-10 the flowering nutes would be 10-36-26 they come out exactly at 6.5 with 7.0 water... it's actually a very stable setup...

Here's what I had when running those chemicals in a hydro system ph'd... The Church Strain...

oh... and scotts mix... it was cheap... and easy to get at homedepot... I'm not concerned about the soil... it's all about what goes into it...

as far as how long he's going to veg them... I'm not sure, it depends on how long it takes for him to get 14 decent looking ones topped at all the same height... and healthy... prob guessing 5-6 weeks... maybe less...

oh... and just to make sure, I've checked the ph going in, and the runoff both weeks to make sure it doesn't change...

after week 3 and prob once every two weeks until week 2-3 of flowering I will water once with some Azamax to keep pests out... hopefully I won't run into too much problem wise, but his setup is in a shed... so it's not all that great for keeping away from pests...

I should say.. not all of these plants will stay here... some are going to be mothers, and some are going to friends... there is actually another strain in that picture too... bottom middle is my own personal strain that prob won't get grown this time around... just mothered out for me... and the very center plant is a seed I'm growing from some bomb Platinum Og I got from Northern Cali... hope it's a female... I did pop 3 more just to be safe...

next week I'll check the color of all of them to see if it needs a little more Nitrogen in the mix... he kinda got the bag of dry ingredients that I mixed up for him damp, so it's all clumpy now... I may toss it out and mix up a new batch to make sure everything is good with that...

Does anyone have any opinion on using wood chips? I was told by a friend to use them, although I've heard they suck nitrogen away from the soil so I may have to adjust that... I also heard that they decompose to more P and K... so That will prob be higher near the end of the grow... Does any of that sound right?

I should mention that I've never actually grown in soil before... I just setup the nutes for a buddy and had him run them at that same mixture on his soil grow... and his stuff came out really good... he never deviated from my 2tbsp per 5 gallons and nutes every two days with 3rd or 4th time only water... to prevent buildup.... so I'm figureing this will be an intersting test for me... and for my buddy to see how well he follows directions...lol

I used to run Hydro... misting systems, ebb and flow... etc... but now I can say that soil is 1000 times easyier... and Way more forgiveing... and from how they've been growing... I'm getting pretty much the same growth rate as my hydro setup ever did... maybe even a little better....

Ok guys, Here's a photo of week 3 1/2, Looking much better, I still havent' gotten over to look at them so I don't know exactly the color of them... I may add more N... but I know the 1000w Hps throws out alot of yellow light, so it's a pain getting the color right with pictures..

I'm going to have him reorganize them tonight... putting small plants on the inside and bigger ones on the edges... gotta get more light to the little guys to catch up...LOL

I'll be removeing 4 of the plants 2 in the middle are a different strain and 2 more will be for mothers... that should leave me with 14 in total... those will get moved into 5 gallon buckets that we're drilling holes in... I think I'll put a thin layer of perlite down at the very bottom of those to allow for better drainage... If there is too much difference between the plants, I will top them way back and wait a full week for them to all even out...

it's kinda Quiet here... hope I'm not just talking to myself...LOL

I'm thinking about doing something I've never done before too...

I might switch the lights from 18 down to 15 for the first week of flowering... it would give it a little more time to grow and should pre-flower, then I'd change it down to 12/12 the only downside would be it'll take a little longer to finish, and it could get very big and out of control... but I think I may chance it...

Looks like some of those plants need some bigger pots with some premium soil. Might be worth the extra money. Have you considered roots organic/fox farms? Just a thought.

I have a buddy growing with fox farm ocean forest, but every time I smell his stuff it smells like mint... which kinda throws me off... I also gave that same friend my nutes... and he uses it the ocean forest... and gets twice what he ever did with reg nutes.. so I dont' think they're as credible as they seem...

Next grow though I may do a 50/50 grow where half the crop has one soil and the other something like ocean forest... just to see how much difference it makes...

The pots are definately getting too small, I'm just going to wait a couple days till some of the smaller ones catch up to re-pot them... I was figureing with them staying in the smaller pots, the bigger plants will get stunted for a couple days to let the others catch up... then they should all be around the same size... so I can put them in 5 gallon buckets and top them...

The one thing I have heard from the buddy growing in FFOF, he does quite a bit of outdoor growing, and he says the more soil you use the better...
