BBC series "The Planets" is nice imo.
"For All Mankind", a sentimental documentary about the moon missions with an Eno soundtrack.

The PBS documentary "The botany of Desire" is one of my all time favorites.
It shows how plants (tulip, marijuana, potato, and apples) have adapted to be useful to us (or just simply desired by us) & thus we are compelled to carry them around the globe.

Since we now have moved to fiction, try the Granddaddy of all -- 2001: A Space Odyssey
Burning a big fat one is sort of a requirement before embarking on this one. Check out the parody that came out a few years later, Dark Star.

I would add Outland as a great space movie and Barbarella as a trippy one.

I haven't seen any of those. Think I'd like em?

I really like 2001 ... only decently realistic spaceflight movie ever made. "Apollo 13" has too much Hollywood BS ... when they had all that archival footage to keep'm honest ... oh :cuss:

2010 was also pretty good ... the space stuff gave up a lot of realism (the spaceships made noise, dangit) but not a bad story.

Imo one of the best spaceflight scenes was in the original "Alien". cn

I'd suggest the BBC series Wonders of the Universe & Wonders of the Solar System. The aforementioned Through the Wormhole & Into the Universe are great too...

While this submission is not strictly a "Space" movie, it still qualifies as a classic favorite.

Contact and Through the Wormhole are great, but if your looking for a movie you probably havent seen then I would try "Sunshine". Not a big release, but has a very solid cast, has some credibility when it comes to the science aspect, and great visuals with an intense soundtrack.

Rose Byrne, Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Mark Strong, Cliff Curtis

Some of it was pretty accurate. The CGI liftoff was accurate enough that a former Apollo astronaut asked where such great footage was found and asked if NASA could have a copy. CGI or not, if it totally fooled an Apollo astronaut, then you know it had to be realistic.

Former ground control crew went to the set that was supposed to be in Houston and they said that other than it being on the ground floor and they were on the second, it was like going back in time ... so that had to be fairly accurate. They also said that actions/reactions were very similar to what occurred.

Maybe it was when Marilyn Lovell's ring fell off in the shower and she freaked ...... which actually did happen to the real Marilyn Lovell.

Of course there was some artistic license taken, like when Jack Swigert/Kevin Bacon was hooking up with the LEM the guys on the ground made it sound like they only had one crack at it and only Swigert/Bacon could do it, when if he couldn't Jim Lovell almost certainty could have and Fred Haise likely could have too. But you have to create a little extra drama when you can.

The stuff about the un-broadcast telecast it true. I remember expecting to see it and instead there was regular programming.

Being the fan of the flick that you are, did you spot the real Jim Lovell in it the first time you watched it or did it take you a second or third time?

I thought A13 was good as well. One of the few movies that got more right than it got wrong. Using the vomit comet to film zero-g sequences gave some nice added realism.

SUNSHINE. You beat me to it. I logged in just to suggest that very movie. I really liked the build up in the beginning.

Also, I strongly, strongly suggest "MOON" with Sam Rockwell. MAKE SURE you bake out before watching. A very trippy story. Not visually trippy, but at some point in the movie you'll be saying "what the fuck?"

Plus it's Sam fucking Rockwell. It never had a wide release. It came out a couple years ago. "MOON" and "Sunshine" are the best sci-fi movies in at least the last 5 years.
