12 Sets of Twins Graduating From One High School Class
12 pairs of high-school seniors are about to graduate from one Georgia school. The 24 seniors at Brookwood High in Gwinnett County are a mix of identical and fraternal twins.
Fox 5 in Atlanta reports that as unusual as the circumstances are, most of the twins themselves find their situation to be perfectly normal.
"It's actually not as weird as people think it is," said one of the twins, Ashley Rivas-Triana. "Like a lot of people are like, what does it feel like? I just have a sister. It's not like we're some sort of alien species or something,"
There's even a set of identical twins playing for the school's softball team. Coach Kent Doehrman says when he called one of the girls into the game, both would respond. Courtney and Caroline Erickson offered some solutions, including wearing different colors and ribbons. "Well I'm color blind so that didn't help," Doehrman said.
Still, it turns out there's an even larger class of twins at Niles West High School. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Illinois school has 14 sets of twins in its sophomore class alone. The twins there are also a mix of identical and fraternal. Student activities director Jessica Ogulnik gathered the students for a photo. Though, she admits getting them all in place at one time wasn't easy.
"One day a member of the sophomore class came to me and said 'I'm a twin, and there seems to be a lot of us,'" she told the paper. "It took two tries, but the second time was a charm," she said.
There are a number of sites dedicated to helping potential parents conceive twins through the medical condition known as hyper ovulation. Fertility drugs are most commonly associated with twin births, though the statistical probability of conceiving twins increases when a woman is in her late 30's and early 40's because of the increased speed of ovulation, according to the site Twin Pregnancy and Beyond.

i'd like to know what percentage of those twins were conceived using fertility drugs. it's just weird they didn't mention triplets or any other multiples that one would associate with fertility treatment. just twins and all clumped up in certain areas. either there's a clinic near by or something's in the water. or is this just more common nowadays? i went to school in the 80s and 90s and from k-12 i only encountered 2 sets of twins, and knew of 2 others. none of this 12 sets of twins in one graduating class stuff.

This is the kind of stupid shit people do that makes me give my girls an extra hug and kiss every day so at least I know they're loved. People like this suck. It's sad all kids don't get to grow up in a loving home. Breaks my heart.

(Newser) – Nearly 40% of the time a New York City dispatcher answers a 911 call, there’s no actual emergency. Yep, in 2010, two-fifths of all calls to New York’s 911 system were accidental “butt dials,” the New York Daily News reports. A total of 10.4 million 911 calls were received that year, a new report found, and police were sent to about 3.5 million emergencies as a result. That’s notable since the number of butt dials was higher than that, at almost 4 million—or an average of 10,700 per day.

(Newser) – A North Carolina entrepreneur thought he was smart to charge customers $25 to hunt gems in his old emerald mine. But he should have looked a bit more carefully first. The first amateur treasure hunters uncovered a giant 50.2-carat emerald worth thousands of dollars. Another couple emerged with a pocket of emeralds and crystals. "My husband asked where we should start digging," said lucky Libby Barrieault, new owner of a big green rock. "I said, 'This looks like a good spot.' Then he said, 'What do you think we can do with this?' and flipped the emerald over to me," she recalled. "It was one of those 'wow' moments."

The following day another couple uncovered the crystals, and 240 carats worth of stones worth up to $40,000. The visit by a group of rock hunters was the first time Jamie Hill had let anyone from the public enter his mine in more than 40 years. "I haven't had a major find in a number of years," Hill told ABC News. "I figured, if you bring in a whole bunch of recreational miners in here and let them loose, it's a great experience for them, and they may just find something."

I'm confused. Why? Just...why? What in the hell would possess someone to strap their kids to the exterior of a car and drive it?? Just curious about what reason they gave.

Dinosaur flatulence may have produced enough gas to change the climate 150 million years ago.

The bizarre claim may sound like a joke but is actually a serious possibility. Like modern day cows, large sauropod dinosaurs would have given off huge amounts of methane gas as they digested the plants that they consumed. There would have been so much of it in fact that it could have had a considerable impact on the climate during the Mesozoic era.

"A simple mathematical model suggests that the microbes living in sauropod dinosaurs may have produced enough methane to have an important effect on the Mesozoic climate," said Dr Dave Wilkinson. "Indeed, our calculations suggest that these dinosaurs could have produced more methane than all modern sources - both natural and man-made - put together."

how in the hell does this happen? i remember back in the day butt dialing was common because people forgot to put the button lock on phones with a single face. nowadays people either have a flip phone which cannot butt dial, or a smartphone which requires a few screen changes before the number pad comes up. and even assuming they can get to the dialing screen just by moving with a phone in their pocket, how do they actually dial a 9, then a 1, and another 1, and then hit send?

i remember around '01 or so i had a phone that would do that and it would always call whoever's name was at the top of my contact list. dude would get like 4 butt dial calls a day from all different people. lol. but that shit's just silly nowadays.

Two Dogs in Mascot-Poisoning Case Euthanized :(639646.jpg

The poisoning of the father and siblings of the N.C. State Wolfpack mascot is now a case of dog killing.

The parents and two siblings of the mascot Tuffy, who are from Tarheel Tamaskan, a Tamaskan dog breeder outside of Elizabeth City, N.C., were poisoned a year ago, but survived. A perpetrator struck again last week, a year and a week after the first incident, using the same method: Bowls of fish doused in antifreeze were buried in the animals’ owners’ yard with their five dogs falling ill following consumption.

But unlike last year when the dogs pulled through, two were euthanized this week, according to Debby Stainforth, a close family friend who is also a Tamaskan Dog Register committee member. Tarheel Tamaskan said on its Facebook page Tuesday the dogs were indeed put to sleep.

In all, five dogs were involved this time, including Tuffy’s father, three siblings, and a Tamaskan purchased from Europe that is not related to the NCSU mascot. Tuffy’s mother died in October after choking on a sock.

While the police had strong ideas of who committed the act a year ago, they could never charge anyone, though the case remains opened.

"The investigation is still ongoing,'' said Pasquitank (N.C.) County sheriff Randy Cartright, who added that his office was never able to collect sufficient evidence to bring the charges from last year’s incident.

Cartright acknowledged the case has now become much more serious and added that his office has also uncovered significantly more clues than a year ago, such as fingerprints from a buried dog bowl that contained the poisoned fish. They have some leads, and the primary school of thought is that the same person or persons committed both crimes.

The owners of Tarheel Tamaskan, John and Christina Bannow, weren't available for comment. Stainforth was told by one of the breeders, "Two-thirds of their kidney function is gone and just a few dialysis treatments will not save them. They would have this for the rest of their short lives and suffer pretty bad. Most people can’t afford the dialysis for one dog, let alone two. There is no choice here.''

Tarheel Tamaskan is located nearly 170 miles northeast of Raleigh near the North Carolina coast. The dogs had been under care at the Chesapeake Animal Hospital in Virginia, but ended up at Greenbrier Emergency Hospital in Charlottesville, Va. That is where Tuffy’s father, Blaze, and his 6-month-old cousin, Nusia, were put to sleep.

Blaze was most severely affected by last year's poisoning, which may have been a factor in his condition this time, Stainforth said, and Nusia's youth was a factor in her kidneys not being able to handle the dosage she consumed.

N.C. State's nickname is "Wolfpack,'' but the school uses a Tamaskan dog as its mascot. The school has a long tradition of using humans dressed in mascot outfits at games, known as Mr. and Mrs. Wuff. But athletic director Debbie Yow decided the school needed a live animal on the sidelines during games beginning in the 2010 football season.

A Tamaskan dog was chosen because it most resembles a wolf and it can handle the commotion involved with being in front of nearly 60,000 spectators.

School officials chose not to use a live wolf because of a possible danger to humans – wolves are known to not respond well to fireworks, which are shot out of the end zones after the Wolfpack scores.

Stainforth said Tamaskans are bred on a small scale compared to other breeds and that the dogs are rare and quite valuable. Breeding is selective and all breeders are required to follow specific standards.

"Pedigree litters are few and far between, as we believe in quality, not quantity, and we aim to produce, above all, healthy puppies with exemplary temperaments and an eye-catching appearance,'' Stanforth said. "All registered breeders must adhere to a strict set of rules to ensure healthy puppies that are raised to the highest standards."

Tuffy was born in 2009 and this summer was designated as a summer of breeding. The other three poisoned dogs returned home Monday evening and aren't expected to experience any effects from the incident, Stainforth said, but will be monitored over the next few months.

That just isnt right one little bit. I really hate when people make me have to agree with PETA with some things, really only on what should be done to people who abuse animals but still in cases like this something very bad should happen to the person who did this.
