Which light to get?

Hey all

i have made a grow box with size is 2foot by 2foot by 4 foot

would a 200w (ACTUAL WATTAGE) dual spec CFL do well?

maybe could get a 300w, but would heat be a issue?

Planning on only 1-2 plants at a time, if that helps with deciding the light

...yeah man, i'd recommend you go with PLLs in a box that size because they are a relatively new form of CFL that is remote ballasted so most of the heat will be removed from the grow space, plus, they come in a wide variety of wattages, the higher the wattage, the longer the bulb (my 55watters are 22inchs) and a wide variety of Kelvin temps so they are very versatile. ...and being straight they are more efficient than common twisty CFLs.

...here's a few shots of my clonebox to show you what they look like and they are available in the raw like this or in prepackaged fixtures if you are the clumsy type, either way, they work great.

Dayum, the highest I could find were 42 watt CFLS ~200w equivalent. Using both a Soft light and Daylight 42w is plenty for a plant as I can see.
The bulbs get pretty hot to the touch, so I could only imagine how much heat them 420w CFLS are putting out. Lemme know!

...yeah man, the first thing to understand is they are using incandescent equivalents as their advertised numbers, which means they are trying to deceive and confuse the uninitiated.

...CFLs definitely have a place in our hobby but more for the beginner or the true hobbiest growing strictly for personal headstash.

...not to mention how overpriced those fixtures are, for that kind of money you could be rockin' LEDs for cryin' out loud, lol.

...thanks man and if you don't mind waiting until later today, i'll post up some links where you can source all the parts as well as an explanation of the simple wiring.

btw, if you want to do some digging on your own the sockets are called 2g11's and the ballast is a Workhorse 8 rated for a max of 220watts and if you aren't the handy type you can find these in pre-packaged fixtures, ...marketed to people who raise fish i believe.

...anyway, when i come home i'll do some digging and see if i can't find those links for ya.

thanks man! nah im handy, i dont know which ballast i will be using, i have a collection(probably hook up x2 55w pll to an an old x2 t5 ballast, 108w), really i had just been wondering where to get the bases because i can get the bulbs at a good price and they offer a lot of advantages over t5 as far as shape and placement.

I was gonna go with LEDs at one point, but changed my mind... was gonna cost me $1100 to do all LED...and the information on them just isn't consistent enough for me to cough up that kind of money... was going with Apollo 10's, three of them, from Cidly.com....but after reading a bunch or reviews for them, changed my mind because people have been saying that they are complete junk...

Suggestions on the CFL????

CFL's have been proven to work though...

...yeah man, i wasn't trying to insult you, only to help you and yeah, the actual wattages are listed but it's still true that those fixtures are way overpriced, if you are gonna use common CFLs you'd be much better served using fixtures like the ones i pictured a couple posts back and those i actually used for more than a year so i'm dead certain you can grow some great buddage under CFLs.

...but if you're still in the shopping and planning stages then i'd strongly suggest you consider the PLLs i also pictured back a couple posts, the straight bulbs, as they are also CFLs, just a newer, superior, remote ballasted form, ...if you check out that link in my last post to my clonebox build the link will lead you to all the information you'll need to make a decision.

is there any reason you can't use HID? ...believe me, a single 600watt HPS or twin 400's would work beautifully in a 4 x 4 and would out perform any combination of CFLs you could put together, ...watt for watt HPS kicks CFL ass.

...also, as someone who has done that whole routine staggering my harvey's and rocking nothing but CFLs (go back to post #7 of this thread) i'd say yeah, you CAN do it but not easily and not at first, when i was doing it i was running 4 DWC's each with it's own lightbar with 8 bulbs for approx. 200watts per fixture and i was pulling 1 DWC every 2 weeks and i yielded between 3 and 4 zipz per bin. (except that with 800watts of actual power CFLs generate a LOT of heat, more than an equal wattage of HPS because with the HPS the ballast is remoted outside the grow)

...AND it was a LOT of work and i personally just got tired of it all, ...a true Sea Of Green as you describe is very labor intensive. ...after i abandoned the DWCs and switched to organic soil i also went to HPS in a small cab, 2x 150watters in a DIY cooltube and in that cab i was running a high-density micro-SOG with 55x 1liter Smartwater bottles and i was harvesting roughly 10 every 2 weeks and i say 'roughly' because i always run multiple strains, i like variety lol, so some weeks more would be ripe and ready than at other weeks.

...anyway, to make a long story short i'd ask you if 16zipz per cycle would be good enough or would you absolutely need it 4 zipz every 2 weeks?

i ask because a SOG is just a perpetual grow with one plant immediately replacing a harvested one so in my own case i decided to grow fewer larger plants and harvest my whole tent on the same day, ...actually i flower in my 4 x 4 closet and i use the tent to veg the next run so they are ready to flip as soon as i take the harvest down, ...so i'm basically running a SOG on an 8 - 10 week cycle and harvesting 11 plants all on the same day.

...i use a single 600 and i just harvested my third run in this space, i just moved in about 8 months ago, so i'm nowhere near dialed in yet and still i harvested 11 plants for just under 11 zipz, ...i flipped 11 more the same day but the run after that i plan on 8 plants and my target is 2zipz per plant, i'm pretty sure i'll get it to 3 once i really get it dialed in but 2 will be easy, just judging by how this current run looks i'll probably hit 2 this run.

anyway, sorry for the ramble, ...give an old fart a bowl and anything can happen, lol.

As much as I would love to run a 1000hps or a 600hps or 2 400hps, it's just not really possible where I am at... The house I rent is very old and has pretty sketchy wiring throughout, so if I up'd the light to anything over a single 400 plus all the fans and that shit, the breaker would be tripping every 10 minutes, lol. But yeah, I'd love to be able to do that...

As far as the heat goes on the CFL's, I will still have the exhaust fan and carbon filter and shit running through the tent, so heat will be kept pretty much at a minimum...

I did a few runs with a SOG setup a little while ago and I was pretty much disappointed with the results that I was getting, which is why I want to get a better lighting setup. I know however, that lots of other stuff goes into the plant besides the lighting. I was running 32 plants before in 2-liter bottles, eight per 2 weeks...was running Widow Bomb and a couple Blue Dream... All were clones from moma, vegged for between 5-10 days before flowering...The biggest weight I got came from the Blue Dream, I would say maybe 11 grams per plant, the Widow Bomb was between 6-8 grams per plant. So yeah to say the least, very disappointing, or maybe I have unfair expectations... That is the main reason I decided to cut down on the number of total plants and take it to 16 or maybe even 12, that will give me the ability to veg them for at least a month before throwing them in, LST'd and all. I'm thinking I should be pulling 1oz minimum per plant at that point, probably closer to 2oz...

Well the main reason for the 2 week cycle is because, guiltyly looking away, we smoke about 1.5oz a week, and I'd like to be able to make small amounts of cash on the side. I could do a single harvest and all that, but by doing it in short cycles, even if I run out, it's only a little ways away, not 8weeks or something like that...

Guess I'm just looking for the best possible setup to get this accomplished without using HPS lights... whether it be CFL's, LED's, or some other shit they come up with (like 2-liter bottles of water reflecting the sunlight into an underground grow with no electricity)...lol...saw a posting about something like that early today, made me giggle. some people, lol...

i also live in an old house with crappy wiring and so i am able to run my 600 on one circuit and i have to run my ac on another, ..i actually had to buy myself a 50ft white extension cord and run it from the kitchen, through the wall and into my bedroom where my grow is located, believe me, if you want it, you can figure out a way.

btw, 800watts of CFL is gonna flip your breaker just as quick as 800watts of HPS, 800watts is 800watts.

also, another thing for you to consider is the hassle of harvest and the smell of harvest, my house reeks for almost 2 weeks during harvest time so if you pull every 2 weeks your house will always reek.

...here is a link to a guy i know on the other forum who grows in a 4 x 3 x 6 space and this link is to his last run where he ran 2x 400's stacked, barebulb vertical style and he just KILLED it, ...he has since move up to a 600 over a 400.
