Trichomes clear for going on 5 weeks...

I searched. So sorry if the answer is out there and I am just another newb re posting the same shiza.

I am a newb in every way. I live in Colorado. They made it legal to grow weed here. I am almost 40 and I have sleep issues and issues with my legs from a soccer injury. So I decided, since it is legal, I will try pot. I tried it about a month ago and I liked it. I slept in like an old baby. I guess the only drawback was that my eyes are dry more than ever. So now I am growing my own since it is not legal until Jan 1st to buy it. Wish I could solve the dry eyes. Maybe certain strains dont have this problem?

I feel lucky as I was able to afford all the props. So my plants were looking about perfect. Too fat with bud to hold themselves up, so I have to tie them.

BUT one quik question please:

5 weeks ago the trichomes appears. 3.5 weeks ago, they were little tall mushroom looking things with heads. Now they are about 50% Cloudy and 50% clear. No amber.

The question is, is it possible to have trichomes take 8 weeks to go from clear to cloudy and start to have some amber?

Shit, one from last yearwasnt ready until like 65-70 days. Just depends on the plants type i guess

It depends a lot on the strain. I've heard some sativas take upwards of 11+ weeks to finish, so assuming you've got some sort of hybrid going, perhaps it's sativa dominant, thus taking longer. As for dry eyes, all you need is a bottle of eye drops. Beats the heck out of a painful leg and no sleep! Was that the first time you'd ever smoked?

Good luck and happy growing!

Just like above some strains will take longer to ripen than others it's all genetics. 5 weeks is day 35 they prol will get ambers more towards the later weeks 7-8. Like I said though its genetics depending

Without the strain we can't give you specifics on how long that strain has finished for us. Further it's also when you like to chop them down too. Some prefer no amber, some a lot of amber etc...

I just did a study on my Pre 98 Bubba Kush, chopping 1 cola / week from week 7 to week 10 to see which I preferred. I'm looking forward to that cure finishing.
Welcome to RIU,

Thanks for taking the time to post your replies on the subject.

These are the strains that are possible with the seed pack I got. Since I knew nothing about any strain and still really don't know anything about all this, I just ordered a mix pack:

5 seeds received. 4 grew. 2 were male and 2 were female. I gave the 2 males to a friend who likes plants in general Like I said, everything so far has been going really well for me. But I check every day on the trichomes as I dont know what is taking so long. I am not saying I flowered 5 weeks ago. I was saying that is when the tricomes showed up. I have been in flowering stage for over 9 weeks now. I apparently have less patience than I expected.

This experience has been really cool except for the dry eyes. Someone has to have created a strain that does not have that side effect. If so, it is the best medicine ever. If the dry eyes continue, like all other meds, it is stricken with a side effect.

Well done for your first grow and long may you continue.

Some strains will take up to 12-14 weeks to finish so they may not be done just yet.

Maybe it's the smoke in the air that are drying your eyes and not because of it in your system, have you tried smoking outside or vaping etc?

Good luck.

It's easy to be over eager to chop. It is also possible to do what I've done and let them run to long. I'm a newer grower so I try to grow some specific strain so I can look up other people's grow journals and see if what I'm growing looks similar. I've found that very helpful.

Another thing is it seems that the breeders are very optimistic about chop date. Some Sativas can go very long and it looks like you have some represented there. So essentially the thinner the fan leaves the longer I figure it's going to take to finish as a very general rule of thumb.

There is also nothing that says you have to harvest an entire plant at the same time. I just harvested one of my Bubba mothers by chopping one of her four colas per week. So I harvested at 7, 8, 9 and 10 weeks. I've got them jarred and plan to test them after curing to decide what is perfect for me.

I also don't want to keep touching the buds looking at the trichomes since there's no way I can stop doing damage to them. So I wait until they are in their harvest window, for my Indicas sometime after 6 weeks. I wait until after their pistils turn orange and shrivel back into the calyx. This is also the time the calyces start swelling. So at that point I usually look at my trichomes weekly and once I get some amber I usually start chopping when I see about the same amount of amber as clear.

Oh and one strain I ran a very sativa phenotype of Nirvana's Aurora Indica, one very important thing I noticed my trichomes never really went cloudy. They went from clear to amber! So I started chopping them when I saw the first few ambers sprinkled in and that worked.

Again, I appreciate the replies. Thank you kindly.

Quick question on drying. In Colorado, it is very dry. I decided to take your advice and chop a branch off, but nothing more. That branch hung for 2 days only. It is really dry. I mean, the flowers are brittle already and breaking off like dry leafs. The little buds are easily breaking off on their stems. I assume this is plenty dry to put in the mason jar and cure? But only 2 days? I bent the branch and it did not completely snap off, but it did crack a sound as half of the branch itself is broken, but still connected with partial bend. I would think I can just open the jar and make sure it is not wet every so often.

All the Best

Forget about the trichomes. When the buds dont seem to be growing anymore. the calyxes have swollen, the pistils have browned and shriveled and a nice coating of trichomes makes the plant look frosty, it is done.
