Satellites Apollo, baker, and Ceres often temporally line up in order in the great circle. The circumference of earth is 24,900 miles, and the satellites orbit at about 110 miles above the surface. If while in great circle, Apollo’s 9,250 miles from baker is 10,250 miles from Ceres, how far are Apollo and Ceres?

lol.. maybe its simple.. or hard.. not sure.. geometry. lol

well thats what i thought at first to , but the answer is actually..6090.8
he gave is the answer, we just need to show how to get the answer :(
lol
shudda posted that also, sorry.

are you ready?

i remember this from ah while back:

draw a circle and draw a straight line

one will rep the allignment and the other Earth.

put in 3 dots and use the measurements..

Now find the radius of earth.

and ill get back to you..

one thing though..

i took geometry in 9th grade..

im 20 >_>

lol take it easy

but to get radius don't i need the diameter? kinda confused., i have the circle and the line and 3 points drawn though,

I GOT IT!!!!

Take the circumfrence of the earth that your teacher gave you and divide it by 3.14. That tells you the diameter of the earth. Add 220 to that (because you have to add 110 miles to each side to represent the distance of the satellites orbit from earth). Then multiply it by 3.14 again. You should get 25590.8.

NOW just do the same math that Capita did, and it'll make sense and add up!

DAMN I'm good.

AND I'm high.

So Capita had the right idea, just didn't take into consideration the additional miles because 24900 is the circumfrence of the EARTH. The satellites are further away from the earth, so the circumfrence of their orbit is bigger than the earths, get it?

I really hope I'm making sense here...

what am i adding ther enot sure.. 110 to each side of what??

To each side of the Earth. Because you said in the problem statement, that the satellites are 110 miles above the surface of the earth. That's 110 miles one ONE side, but because they circle the entire earth, you have to add 110 TWICE, to represent the distance of the satellites from both sides of the earth.

I'm gonna brake this down really basic. Draw a circle and think of it as the earth. Then draw another circle around it, bigger, and think of that as the circle of the satellite's orbit. To solve your problem, you need the circumfrence of the BIGGER circe, cuz that's the line the satellites are spaced out on.

To figure out the circumfrence of the bigger circle, you need to find the diameter of the bigger circle. Since you know the circumfrence of the smaller circle (the earth) you calculate to find IT'S diameter.

Draw a line straight down the middle of both circles. The diameter of the bigger circle is the earth's diameter plus the distance between the bigger circle and the smaller circle. You know that's 110 miles because your problem says so.

Get it yet?

24,900 miles - cicumference
24900/3.14 = diameter
diameter = 7929.936
+220 = 8129.936
8129.936 x 3.14 = 25,527.999

Cicumference of the sattelites orbit = 25,527.999

9250+10250 = 19500
25,527.999 - 19,500 = 6027.999

but his answer says 6090.8

so hmm did i mess up on the amth somewhere?

24900/3.14 = 7929.9363057324840764331210191083
7929.9363057324840764331210191083+220 = 8149.9363057324840764331210191083

8149.9363057324840764331210191083 x 3.14 = 25590.8

9250+10250 = 19500

25590.8 - 19500 = 6090.8
