Minimum Wage Would Be $21.72 If It Kept Pace With Increases In Productivity

Pada you may find it strange but increasing what you pay employees also increases your tax, insurance, and a whole range of other things an an employer and business owner. You may also find it strange that people with degrees won't want to make minimum wage and ask for an appropriate increase themselves and that's how the story goes. Everything gets higher and nothing really changes.
That's fine with me, these are things business owners should already be paying for anyway

I would assume people with advanced degrees would want more than minimum wage, regardless of what the minimum wage was. Putting time towards an education should ultimately translate to a higher salary or a better job. Again, that is something that should fall on the shoulders of the employer. We should be fighting for better benefits and higher wages, not competing for the lowest wage with no benefits and calling that fair because that's all the market has to offer.

harley davidson does not import the grand majority of their parts and they are assembled right here in the US of A.

besides domestic airfare, harleys, mortgages, and walmart stock, what else is not imported?

levi's 505 jeans are made in the USA.*http://reviews.us.levi.com/1341/10952143/reviews.htm

red delicious apples? let me check with my neighbor to the north, washington state. yep, they're still in the USA.

mcdonald's big macs? several components there, the most important and expensive being the beef. a simple drive up the I-5 adjacent to bakersfield will show you that yes, that beef is all made right here in the USA.

was just in hawaii, could have sworn i saw bananas growing there as well as quarantine zones.

that's 8 out of 12, all made in the USA.

more failure from the resident halfwit.
what a fucking cock smoking liar.

Levi Strauss & Company, a brand practically synonymous with the U.S.A., decided to shutter virtually all domestic production and shift its manufacturing overseas. While news of the layoffs -- roughly 22 percent of Levi's global workforce -- resounded heavily across the worn wooden floors of Levi's San Francisco headquarters, the halt is also bad news for America's textile industry. More than just closing shop, Levi's failure to manufacture on home turf reflects a sobering reality for the industry. This is the final death knell of a decades-long lament.

Business owners don't have a magic wand to make all your dreams come true.
Since Obama took office I've seen businesses drop left and right. Families that have been in business 100 years or more.
You are paid for what you are worth.
Degrees make you smarter than the paperboy or burger flipper.

What or how do you want "the market" offer you things it can't give?
China, illegals, welfare take the market away from the American worker.
and you bitch " all the market has to offer".
WTF?

The price and taxes increase with your workers wages to list some examples and this is just the basics of additional cost besides the wage increase.

  • Federal income tax withholding
  • Social Security tax withholding (6.2% up to the annual maximum)
  • Medicare tax withholding (1.45%)
  • State income tax withholding
  • Various local tax withholdings such as city, county, or school district taxes, state disability or unemployment insurance.
[h=3][/h]People that say you can just increase wages and everyone is happy have no fucking idea how shit works. You think outsourcing is bad now, double the minimum wage and watch the straw that broke the camel's back.

the brand in question was levi's 505s, which are still made here in the US of A.

other high end levi's are also still made here, such as the 501, 507, and others.

a quick check on the web shows that about half the parts are american made, especially the most important parts, and all of it is assembled here.

i'll give you bananas and even half the apple market, but harley 883 sportsters and levi 505s are american made products. you lose.

So you admit you have a list of cherry picked items (only a specific model) that rely on heavy imports for a comparison?

Bayer is a German company
Starbucks imports 90% of it's product.
McDonalds Imports even beef to cut down on price
Nike and Levi's are fucking sweat shop companies
Fruit is largely imported.'
music CDs made overseas and still marked up ridiculously, cost about 7 cents to make.

So if a company outsources 90% of their company and barely reduce prices I fucking lose? The whole fucking chart is a joke. Clearly trying to manipulate people that aren't willing to do the research. The majority of that fucking list is do to outsourcing, importing, or not even a fucking american company. oh wait that's not what this chart is for, they don't care if the listed companies are importing/exporting going bankrupt. Your sources are for financial adviser site trying to sell you services.

I just turned the alarm off and about to jump in the shower, I see you still have feeling for my well being, Want to come over and suck my dick again before I head off to pay your wife's tuition?

i used the chart to illustrate that big macs have gone down in price compared to the purchasing power of the dollar, despite a near 50% increase in minimum wage over the same time period.

Bayer is a German company
i conceded aspirin.

Starbucks imports 90% of it's product.
i conceded starbucks special roast.

McDonalds Imports even beef to cut down on price
i must be fucking dreaming then when i pass their massive cattle farm on my way to phoenix via LA from portland.

and an american worker always slaps that beef on the bun to make the final product.

Nike and Levi's are fucking sweat shop companies
nike, yes. and levi has turned in that direction.

but levi's 505s and other high end jeans are still made here in the US of A.

if you want to believe those hicks up in washington, 68% of our apple production for frsh consumption comes from washington state alone.

red delicious apples are overwhelmingly an american made product.

i'll concede bananas since hawaii probably only accounts for less than half of our banana consumption.

why are you inviting me over to suck on your penis? that sounds kinda gay, therefore you lose.

It's not hard to see how increased minimum wage will drive up prices... you suddenly have to pay all your employees 3 times what you were paying before. Do you think corporations are just going to absorb the impact themselves? Nope, theyre going to pass the costs onto the consumer. And thats just the wage cost, nevermind insurance and taxes and so on. I can only assume people who suppprt minimum wage increases haven't taken even an introductory economics class..

U.S. AG’s Brother Appears To Employ Illegal Immigrants
RALEIGH — U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s brother, William Holder, apparently employs illegal foreign workers at one or more of the four McDonald’s restaurants he and his wife Deborah purchased last year in Wake County, a Carolina Journal investigation has found.

If a business raised it's prices because now the law says that the employer must pay the employee more for minimum wage, what incentive would I have to buy anything from that company? If I can't afford what he's charging, why wouldn't I just go to his competition with lower prices who is still paying his employees the new minimum wage?

If someone with a degree doesn't like what the job pays...they don't have to accept the job. Some people have to realise that their chosen professions don't pay very well, and should have chosen a different field of study while in college.

You must be dreaming or living under a rock the last decade, broken english is pretty common at McDonalds. They import beef from both NZ and Australia and this is just beef we're talking about we haven't even touched imports from all their other shit.

nike, yes. and levi has turned in that direction.

Your contention is irrelevant. The problem is only one place makes Levi in the US and they only make a handful because it is more of a novelty item than anything. The price for US made Levi's are 130-200 dollars a pair. They are not the 40dollar jeans on that picture, the cheaper inflation adjusted levi's are made in a sweat shops. At 150 bucks for a pair of US made jeans the obvious inflation is oh so obvious.

red delicious apples are overwhelmingly an american made product.
US imported 420 million pounds of fresh apples in 2010.
China produces 41% of the worlds apple market.

again, another concession. not sure why you're wasting your breath here.
So lets go ahead and conclude that tangible items on that list has is a few cents cheaper because of serious fucking outsourcing and importing.

So that leaves us with

Airfare which has been struggling to stay afloat the last decade. Even then I am a little apprehensive on how they calculated the cost since airlines have pretty much stripped all basic necessities for traveling and now has a pay to play system. You may get cheaper airfare but if you want to check a bag it's going to cost you.

Housing well this is fucking obvious, are housing isn't worth shit anymore. You can't even fairly compare this with inflation the bubble just busted.

Walmart stocks another thing that is import reliant, trying to compare inflation with stocks in a shit economy is fucking retarded.

No fucking way 20 dollar minimum wage is going to happen. Right now it's cheaper to load metal on a truck, ship it to the rails, ship it across country, load it on a boat, ship it to china and let them smelt it and ship it back to us cheaper than we can do it here. We have already priced our self out of the market.

You must be REALLY dumb...so a business has just to benevolently absorb a new cost...on their profit margin?

Do you have ANY idea how businesses work?

Do you know WHY someone starts a business?

Ill give you a hint, it's something to do with dollars and cents.

I guarantee 100% of those employers would rather take up the extra cost than go flip burgers at McDonalds.

Pada I am not trying to be a dick but there is obviously a lot more you're not seeing. Depending on the size and profit margin of a minimum wage company I would say most couldn't even sustain absorbing a doubling of salary per employee. Employers pay a lot more for you than just your wage, a rule of thumb around 20% more minimum and this is without insurance. It cost me closer to 35% do to all the state regulations and federal safety courses I have to send my employees to yearly.

I must have read that article and mixed up some of the details, I didn't consider smaller businesses. I was thinking it's disgraceful huge corporations like Walmart don't pay their employees higher wages. Those companies could undoubtedly take the loss in profits without hurting anyone.

So how about this, for any corporation with profits exceeding a certain number are required to increase the minimum wage they pay their employees, what that number is is debatable, but would you support something like that?

no . If the min wage goes up, the dividends on my walmart stock (or the stock itself) goes down. So my 401k take s a hit. SO I cant retire. Yes I own walmart, and target, and pepsi. massive companies with a bunch of min wage zombies that arent worth 21/hr.
you are the typical gen yer with no comprehension of business or capitalism or micro or even macro economics. Read a book.

how about we just get our robots better. Then we dump anybody making min wage onto an island. If you are only makinig min wage you are a drag on society anyway.

Padwan,

What you fail to understand here is that most companies make somewhere between 1% and 5% of their gross profits.

The most expensive thing involved in almost any business are labor costs.

You suggest that labor costs can be more than doubled and the employers will just *take* it to avoid working at mcdonalds.

What will happen is employers will shutter their companies, sell off the assets and go live in Jamaica before they are willing to eventually go bankrupt because the numbers do not work.

I think you feel you are going to be 5* more productive than the average employee and thus should immediately start making over 42,000 dollars per year plus benefits. And your justification for this is the employers are greedy.

I tell you what. Go out into the marketplace and start interviewing for jobs. Demand that salary and prove to the employer that you will obviously be worth it and you never have to worry what the minimum wage is set at.

Edit: You keep trying to skip over the hard work part and go straight to the compensation part...

all these claims that if min wage goes up, prices will go up.

but the only actual evidence we've seen in this thread shows the opposite.

from 2000-2010, min wage went up nearly 50% and the price of a big mac adjusted for inflation went down.

according to the no_evidence_economists of rollitup, it should have gone up by nearly 50%! but it didn't.

is anyone ever going to provide any evidence or proof for their misguided assertion, or just plead how it's so fucking common sense some more?
