4 x JOCK HORROR (fem), 600w hps.

Hi guys, how's it going? I've been a lurker on here for a couple of years and I've finally decided to try my hand at some serious *cough* ...gardening. I've done some crappy cupboard grows at uni before but the results are barely worth mentioning so I like to think of this as my first grow Before I start I just have to say the community here is awesome and you've already saved my plants multiple times from various deficiencies and my own ineptitude, so thanks!

I decided to grow Jock Horror partly because I love the mother strains (skunk x NL x Haze) but mostly because there really don't seem to be that many people growing it and I'm a sucker for the underdog. I may come to regret this decision but we shall see. If you have any positive reviews of growing or smoking the strain feel free to pipe up. If you have any negatives... leave them till the end and we'll all have a good laugh at how retarded I was to grow that shit


On to the setup then:

Seeds: 4 x Jock Horror. Purchased from Nirvana seeds

Soil: BioBizz Light Mix

Nutrients: All BioBizz - Grow, Bloom and Top Max. If anyone knows of any weaknesses or gaps in these products that need filling then please net me know! I've already discovered to my alarm that neither the soil nor grow mix contain magnesium so that's one thing.

Water: Good ol' tap water adjusted to pH 6.4

Environment: 10L (~2gal) pots, 1.2x1.2x~1.5 mylar-lined grow tent, 600w HPS lamp, crappy £6 fan, 4" extractor fan with carbon filter.

I planted 6 seeds on 11/09/13 (or 9/11/13 for you Americans). Two germinated but died very quickly, one was a Jock and the other was a free Power Africa. I was sad but I have a feeling the 4 remaining plants are going to relish the extra space!

Started the plants in 1L pots where they did pretty well but stopped growing after about two weeks. I put it down to over watering and some magnesium and nitrogen deficiency issues, turned out that the BB Light mix really is pretty light and the roots had already filled the space. I didn't know that they would need transplanting so soon but after I moved them to the 10L's they bloody exploded.

Mostly short and bushy so far, I believe they're indica dominant which is good 'cause i have limited height available. Having said that, duh internenz has mentioned that these babies will shoot the fuck up during flowering so I may have to get creative with some string. I have fimmed about a week ago them which has resulted in some great extra side growth, however i think I only got it right on 2 / 4 plants. I guess we'll see.

Ok here's some pictures of the plants at roughly 6 weeks of veg. They're about 12 -14 inches tall now so I don't really know whether to carry on vegging or begin the flowering. I'd say they could probably grow another 12 inches without having trouble from the light but from what i've read that's entirely feasible during the flowering period!



As you can see from the tops some of the fan leaves have bits missing. This is a result of my clearly not quite right fimming! I tried to chop off about 80% of the growing material at the top but some of the leaves just carried on growing anyway. I might have to try again, unless this is normal?

High ''budz....noticed you are into a power africa as well as me. I got mine as a freebie from Rhino. My thing is that i'm growing 6autos and the P.Africa in the one tent..4ft x 4ft x 6.5ft. My auto's are 'bout ready but my P.A. is only bout 13inches in height. This is my 1st attempt at this power africa and the description of it is a tall bushy plant, mines is a short bushy plant, after 6 wks of veg,ok, they get bigger buit im not too pleased about this situation. Am I the only one with a midget plant???? If you get round to an answer then cheers bud,will help in anyway I can..Toke on. Plus.Can you do autos in DWC systems? thnx again.

Hey dude, I got my Power Africa as a freebie as well. Unfortunately it was one of the two that died right after germination so I didn't get a chance to see it fill out properly! What lights have you got on it?

Just grabbed one of the plants in the middle, squeezed it around a bit and bent it in half. I hope that was the right thing to do...

Lots of exciting shit going down! The first plant i tried supercropping has responded well so this morning I did two more. There's one plant I've left untouched cause it's already a lot shorter than the others.

I bent the plant about 3 nodes down from the top and tied it just a tiny bit below horizontal. I've marked in the pictures where the bend point is cause my proper camera's out of batteries so the pictures are a bit shitty.


Problems encountered with supercropping so far:


1. The plant's stems are incredibly thick with a maximum of 1" between nodes! This made it incredibly difficult to actually bend them over and thus scared the shit out of me. Worked out OK though, just had to pinch them really hard and bend them super carefully.


2. Theres a couple of tiny abraisions through the outer wall of the stem but I don't think they're anything to be concerned about. I've stuck a bit of tape over the biggest just to help prevent any infection


Benefits of supercropping so far (bear in mind that the first plant was only done 24 hours ago):


1. I've been able to move my light down a good 5".


I don't think I've read any threads dealing with supercropping a Jock Horror so far so I'll try and keep up to date with some detailed information about any problems resulting from the strain or my noobity.


As I've mentioned there's one plant left out from the pics because she's short and trundling along just fine on her own. I'll probably leave her so I can compare individual yields in a few months. All these plants have alreadybeen fimmed with varying degrees of success. The branches shot outwards and the plants became far more bushy, I just didn't manage to completely stop the upward growth from the top. Don't think I removed quite enough material.


Anyway, on to the pictures:




I do actually have a very slight problem with one of the plants that I can't figure out. It's got a yellower tinge than the others and the largest leaves are a tiny bit droopy (you can see it in the fan leaf on picture 4). I've upped the fert in case it's a nitrogen def. and I gave the a good watering yesterday so I don't know if it's that. I might add some cal-mag to the mix but one of the plants has already had a mag def. and it doesn't look like that. If anyone has any clues I'd be very grateful!

Few pics from after the bending. None of the girls seem to have died which is good. Now have a nice even canopy with a max height of about 12" and plenty of tops working their way up. I'm thinking scrog might be a way to go but I'll see how evenly they grow on their own first.

I'm a little concerned that the ladies don't see to be growing as fast as they were at one point... however, I have been fucking about with them quite a lot so I guess that could be why. Also might be completely psychological due to the fact that I can only go about 4 hours without checking on them at the moment!

Anyway pics. Any comments/criticisms/advice are very welcome!

Having some issues with drooping and yellow tips on new growth. I've narrowed it down to over watering, N toxicity or heat/light stress. I'm pretty sure the temp in the grow tent is fine but I've raised the light a couple of inches anyway. I'm also gonna back off the ferts and just give the girls water (pH 6.4) and a splash of cal-mag in case it's a micro-nutrient deficiency. Growth has slowed quite a bit but that could also be due to the super-cropping.

I have a strong suspicion that I've just been too active with the girls and not given them space to do their own thing. Too much fert, too much water, too much training. I'll back off for a bit and hopefully some down time and relaxation will have them right as rain in a few days! If anyone wants to contradict me on this opinion be my guest, I'll put some pictures up if the problem persists.

I was wrong about everything, they were just under watered with a tiny bit of nute burn! Gave them some pH 6.4 water with a splash of magi-cal + and they're doing absolutely fine and dandy.

Switched the light to 12/12 last night and bent the last plant this morning. I was planning on leaving one un-supercropped to compare yields but it was outstripping the others in height very quickly. I figured that whatever I found out probably wouldn't be worth the lost yield from the others due to them being further from the light.

Anywho heres some pictures of the ladies. I've got a lovely even canopy now with around 8-12 tops on each plant but I still think scrogging might be worth it. Any thoughts?

Well the girls have been under 12/12 for 10 days now and they're filling out nicely. I also took your advice and repotted into 18 Litre pots. I don't know how much is due to flowering and how much due to re-potting but the girls have shot up and are filling the space nicely. Had a few hitches in the process, I completely snapped the main stem of one of the plants about 4 nodes down but I taped/tied it back in place and somehow it doesn't seem to be dead! Resilient little beggars.

Here's some pics, sorry about the HPS light, I'll get some decent shots when they've started to bud properly


It's clear that only one of the plants (Front left in pic 1) was fimmed correctly. It has no discernible main kola but about 7 or 8 equal size/height bud sites. The other plants have definitely responded well to the super cropping and the attempted fim gave them time to bush out properly but they still have a clear 'main' kola as it were with much more growth than the smaller newer bud sites (see pic 6). I'm going to be pressed for space but I think with some creative tying and maybe a screen I can keep them low enough without lopping any more plant material off.

I'll end with a question: In your experience is lollypopping worth it and have I left it too late? I've got lots of large bud sites on each plant but there's still a few pathetically small ones hiding under the foliage. Can't decide wether to cut them off or leave them and maybe get a few nugs of early smoke.

Another round of bending/tying yesterday. Pulled all the tops into their own spaces and flattened out the canopy about 5 inches lower than before. As you can probably tell I'm really battling against height restrictions here. Hopefully yesterday will be the last round of training but they're only 2 weeks into flower so we'll see. Here's three of the plants before and after tying and the last picture is of the canopy this morning after all the bud sites have turned back towards the light.

Day 17 of flower. Upward growth for the most part has stopped now (thank buggery). All the training has paid off as the four plants now almost completely fill the grow space and the canopy is nice and even. The buds are starting to fatten up and I was pleasantly surprised this morning by a light dusting of crystals.

Jock Horror tip: These plants are SO RESINOUS. The grow area barely smells at all so far but if you give one of the top stems a little rub the smell is so overpowering I can barely believe it. Mouthwateringly skunky.




I'm using BioBizz Bloom, Grow and TopMax at the moment but I've got a local hydro store that sells literally everything. Has anyone got a recommendation for an effective organic bud-fattener?

I've got the train wreck on the go from seed just dying to get it under my 400hps in a weeks time.... I nearly killed that when it was a baby, ripped the seed of and took 1and a half baby leaves it's made a full recovery .....

Thats the power Africa, super cheese and the ones I've got ready to go into the flowering room mate.....

You have done really well with the canopy, filling up your room nicely....

Ahh ok well that's good news I'll be looking forward to seeing how your trainwreck does cause I'm definitely growing that next! Had it in the 'dam and it to this day it remains my favourite ever smoke.
I always do that with the seeds, I'm so fucking impatient. It's probably my meddling that killed one of the Jock seedlings and the PA one.

With the PA and supercheese are they autos or 12/12 from seed? Or if neither how long did you veg for?

Just a quick update with some pics. Day 21 of flower:



Plants are a lovely shade of green, absolutely no problems for weeks now. Still feeding with every watering (every ~3 days) with Bloom, Grow, Top-Max and occasionally a splash of Magne-Cal+. These Jock Horror's had a shaky start but since I got the watering schedule right they've been an absolute dream to grow!
