A-51 led question.

K so I have a small superbox by supercloset and my plan is to take out the 250w cfl that's in it after my current grow is over and put either the xgs 160 or the xgs 190 in. I will be keeping this box in flower at all time and putti g one clone a week in it from a mother I already have. So I will be using this box as a little sea of green to just keep me self sufficient and constantly pulling a small harvest a week. Each plant will just be one main cola as is customary in a sea of green style of growing. I am however looking to achieve as close to an ounce per plant as possible. That being said my question is.... is the xgs-160 or the xgs-190 capable of acheiving these results?

Demnsions; 24"Lx18"Wx36"H. I know the A-51 lamp demnsions for both models are 18"Lx12"Wx2.5". I also know that they cover a 9square foot area. This will be my first LED run and I've heard of ppl burning plants with LED's. Obviously I don't want that to happen, but I also know you can run them on different strength's as far as watts. The 2013 xgs-160 has both red and white, where as the xgs-190 has only white. I'm pretty sure both lamps can be used in flowering as well as veg.

Would the 2013 xgs-160 be better suited for my application, or would the xgs-190 still be better b/c of the watt differential as far as reaching my yield goal is concerned?

I would look at a smaller light for your area, maybe the Bonsai Hero LED. Both of the A51s are too much for your area. Unless you wait for about a month, there's a smaller 85w that would be much better for you.

So do you think the a-51's would burn the plants on low? And do you really also think the 85w bonsai would give me the results I'm looking for. Remember I have an 8 site system and I'm trying to get as close to an ounce on each one cola plant as possible...

I think the Bonsai Hero is closer to 60-65w, you won't find a better small power lamp out there unless you build it yourself.

18"x24" is only 3 square feet, not to mention only 36" of height, neither of the A51s will work well in that area, even on the lower power setting.

The 85w A51 will be around sometime in January 2014. Followed by a larger unit for 4x4s in April/May 2014 :fire:

Just noticed the amount of threads started about Area-51 LEDs....maybe you should start a thread 'Eraserhead answers questions on Area-51 panels and/or the UFO crash.....' ?

i guess thats why you have a forum on the site though....

No it does not. And I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

The plan is to have 4 different sized lamps, 85w being the smallest, and the 4x4 the biggest, the 190w model, and one between the 190w and 4x4, in 2 spectrum choices, all white, and red/white, possibly using some Osrams along with the Crees.

The work never subsides huh EH... :)

Just looked at the bonsai and even more so to my earlier question. If its more like 65w you really think I can pull the results I'm going for on a 65w bonsai. Again running an 8 site sea of green trying to get an ounce per one cola plant???

There are a few guys around who use the bonsai leds that can probably offer better insight than mine...but I just can't see just one producing enough light to net 8oz.

Pretty much, there's just not enough height.

If you're looking to get an 8oz yield, you'll need a bigger area. 18"x24"x36" just won't allow for much growth, regardless of what light you use.

If you are definitely going to go with that size grow area, the Bonsai Hero is the best choice. Or build your own lamp. Bridgelux Vero LEDs are cheap and very efficient. Rapid LED has a lot to choose from. Neither of those choices calls for any soldering.

So are you saying that either of the current models would burn or harm the plants?

Well the yield thing since its a sea of green with an 8 site hydro system would only have the last 2 or 3 with any bud. the plan is to put one in every week. The first few will be stretching. What I am shootinng for is for the 8th week plant, the one that comes out every week to be very close if not an oz.

Cree WW and Osram 660nm!!^^.......................me likey...............lol, I know you hate those "peaky" deep reds;-)

Still against remote driver(s) and passive cooling design????

If your willing to rotate that 8 site setup(youngest on the border sites and full flower in the center sites, harvest and repeat)...yes then the hans panel is sufficient to get your weights.

If your long-term goal is a small perpetual harvest go with the hans. If you have any bigger ambitions I would get the new A51 light and find a slightly bigger space. It has two settings (130 or 190) so it can grow with you.

There's nothing wrong with deep red, just as long as there's not too much. I like the datasheets of the Osram deep red, the spike is not as narrow and extreme as the Philips and a lot of the Chinese DRs. I'm working on a good ratio between the Osram, XPE2 and XTE CW. That's the fun part. :bigjoint:

Remote drivers are okay, some designs call for it, some do not. There's enough room in my housing case for the drivers, and the fans keep those cool as well, they only add about 1°F to the inside housing case temps.

Passive cooling, you'll never see me with a passive cooled LED. 2w of cooling goes a very long way. It's a matter of 25°-30°C vs. 50°+, a huge difference for just a couple of watts. That and the need for a bigger heatsink for passive cooled will increase the materials cost and a lot of extra shipping cost, and still won't be as efficient as a couple watts of fans keeping the LEDs cool. Plus, those fans are super quiet. You need to be right next to them to hear them, and they're still very quiet.

I'm looking at these 140mm fans that move even more air, they are quieter than my current 120mm fans, and use 0.7w each. I bought a few of them, I have some high hopes for them.
