The Iraq war mistake made me a Democrat. But I still go either way depending on the issue. I actually can't believe that most people ID with either party. Can't we have our own ideas on individual issues?

My parents were both democrats, true Kennedy worshipers.
Like my parents, living in California, I also leaned left, this continued all the way through college and a few years after.

After starting a business I became indirectly involved in local politics and eventually it made me more interested in politics in general.
I took notice that the overwhelming majority of unfriendly business laws and regulations were coming from the left side of our legislature, the choice then became a no brainer to me, I became a fiscal conservative.

I rarely get involved in social policies, but I do consider myself pretty moderate in that arena.

Then seing bolth my parents working 40+ hours a week to hope to make ends meet, but the people up the road in section8 and public houseing that have never had a job in their lifes but drive new cars get their kids free breakfast, lunch, soup kitchens, and rape the rest of the social programs

I think the anger that the conservatives I knew early on seemed to have was repellant to me. All the least appealing aspects of life seemed conservative like war, Christianity, big business, and with that I leaned to just issues. The need to have disability and the importance of social programs in my life made sense that I be a democrat. It was not a hard choice.

Not sure if my comment is relevant but anyway here it is, I had no interest in politics until I read a book called Escape from Camp 14 (I think was 14 or something), and then a blog about South Africa, on the same day, my head nearly burst and but I finally chose a side and I have been reading ever since. That was about a year ago or so. Thats why I am so intrested in American politics's, ours is shaped around yours and Brtitans from what I can gather. The similarities are pretty scary at any rate.

I don't know when or where you grew up but every protest I witnessed came from angry liberals.
Come to think about it, as a kid I remember watching news clips about demonstrators yelling, spitting and trowing things at American Veterans coming home from the Vietnam war. I can't recall any conservative groups back then expressing so much anger, violence and hatred towards our men who fought for our country.

I also remember my parents being against the war back then but never once did they say a derogatory word towards the men fighting it.

So, as a child, you watched protests of the Vietnam War, and were somehow able to identify these protestors as the libtards you continue railing against 40 years later?

I can't make such claims. When I was a kid, I did things like watch cartoons and ride my bike. The biggest worry I had as a child wasn't a war, it was my father finding out I fucked up one of his tools, or that he would notice I hadn't finished my chores.

Congratulations on being one of the very small minority of voters on whom EVERY election is decided.
For most people Party affiliation is TRIBAL and often inherited from parents or a geographic location.
People who are open minded enough to be SWING VOTERS are the only ones who actually vote on the issues, rather than mindlessly following the usual tradition.

The real truth is, even if one "side" had unadulterated control with no chance of interference from anywhere, there would not be a damn thing different than it is right now.

The system as a whole has built and solidified the disunity within to such a level as to render it irreparable. With that said, comes the dawn of a new age of government. I have no idea wtf it will be like, but one thing is for certain, it will not be anymore for the people than it is right now, more than likely far worse.

I sincerely hope my time here has passed before such a day.

Calling draftees babykillers was misdirected angst. It is tragic that such things happened but it was actually not as common as people think. Still, it was fucked up. There were a lot of veterans protesting too.
