I would go LED. I do not have any experience however it is evident they are way more efficient.
HPS bulb gives off light 360 degree therefore a lot of light is wasted (reflected light is a lot lower intensity) and a hell of a lot of energy is wasted as heat.
LED gives of < 120 degrees light...

I got the 50w yesterday. Using my phone LUX app it measures about 11,000 at about 2 foot (no more even when placed right next to light).
Very very bright, says the colour is 3000k. Have a clip on fan keeping it cool.
