If this max height for the plant alone is four feet then I'd veg to 1 - 1/2 feet and then flower.. (a plant can double and even triple it's height from veg to flower) And you do not need to keep a male plant anywhere near the female.. this is only in the flowering stage though. If a pollen sack bursts and spurts out his jizz it will get all over your female plant and all over everything else in your grow room.. Avoid male plants unless you wish to breed, in that case you need an isolated room to flower the males in.
