yes perilite is good in the soil, it makes it easier for the roots to grow. If you have just soil it will pack down and that is not good. You can use vermiculite as well but be sure to wear gloves when handling, it has been known to cause cancer. Scary huh.. you can even buy that stuff on the shelf anymore. Good Luck
