It will thicken and harden as it gets older. Another trick I use for the weaker thinner stem is to have a slight fan breeze on the plant. That will cause it to thicken the stem to steady herself

So hard to tell without a jewlers loop to look at the tricombs. If you dont have a loop I usually wait for the pistols to reseed into the buds as the fatten up. Your look close but without seeing the tricombs its difficult to be accurate and dont want to give you bad advice

The gray mold is bud rot and will spread to the rest of the plant so all visible affected areas should be removed asap. Hopefully someone's else can chime in about the Caterpillars. Not sure if neem oil would help or not.
