When the shell falls off, there are only two small, rounded leaves - often pressed together. Do you have two leaves? If not then you lost one.

I can't say for sure, but just a thought - seems the spotting is kind of following the veining in the leaves, just as a mag. deficiency yellows the veins - too much magnesium maybe?

I have dreams like that all the time. I agree with FlyLikeAnEagle, all of us are capable. I don't think seeing a glimpse of the future negates all of our choices, either - it just means, somewhere, you've already made the choices.

Sounds pretty ambitious for a first grow, but I think you're definately on the right track! The two biggest things you're going to have to watch, is the heat with those lights, and keeping the plants at the correct moisture level. Keep on posting as you progress, good luck!

Your first grow died from a combination of heat and overwatering. Honestly, I don't think you're going to be able to run the 400's in an atttic, either - just way too hot. I run a pair of 400's in a room that's 8x7x8, and lights on, the temps stay around 75C - but only with 65C air constantly...

Be patient with the rest, as well - it can be up to a week or more, before they sprout, without germination first.

This was my little mutant White Widow - took forever for the first set of leaves to come out, and then they were lopsided. She was about half the size of the rest for the first month or so, and I almost tossed her. She wound up outgrowing her sisters. Now she's huge! lol

If you can't find any Cal-Mag right away (I wound up ordering on-line), a quarter tsp of that Epsom's salt in the water will help with the magnesium - but that's a short-term fix. Might get her by for the moment, though.
