when it was time to cut her down, i cut off some of the buds and put them in a jar. is this the right way to cure, for good tasting smoke?

my plant is about two feet tall and is budding up nicely, not as much as i would like but it works. i got lucky on one of my sacks and got the seed. i dont want to lose the plant. can i clone a plant that has budded? and still get the bud off the main plant? ill have pics soon
