You would have done well to start training it a bit earlier so as to keep an even canopy. but you have got the general idea of it, wait and see what happens, your lower growth will definatly improve, but at the stage youre at i wouldnt expect them to catch up all the way

Could be anything really but it sounds like the weather could be a key cause. Try not to let your plant be too wet too often and also you dont want it sitting in saturated soil constantly. if your new growth is still coming through healthy then dont worry to much about losing old low fan leaves...
