for a run that short with the power levels at play I really don't see any reason to go down to 14 gauge if it doesn't fit in the connector on the board. My 24+ inch run of 18 gauge has never even gotten warm. I think you're overthinking this.

correct. lower gage equals larger size. just like shotguns. to answer the OPs question, I use 14 gauge from the drivers to the board because I mount my drivers outside the tent. For a short run 18 gauge is perfectly fine.
