awwww that sucks! well, i second what dajosh was saying about over watering it, the roots wont stretch out if its not searching for water and nutrients, but at the same time you dont want it bone dry. a wet paper towel in a ziploc bag works best for me, thats how i started my sour d. soaked...

how big is your watering can? and how often do you feed them? too much nutes can cause lockup and burning, but if your flushing it well with water in between feedings id say youre probably ok...

the chicken wire was easy to attach, just used hot glue, had to glue one then let it cool, do another one let it cool, and so on until the whole thing is attached. and its pretty solid i dont think that its coming off any time soon. im thinking about gluing the screens down on my next project...

well you could either get a soil tester and spike the medium to test it or you could get the hydro ph test kit and test the runoff, not sure which one would be more accurate, but both fairly cheap.

i got an idea for your next one, use whats called a "chiller" i think. have an air intake tube pointing down into a the pan of water, that way you can have the fan on top like i suggested, but not sure how you would integrate something like that with the little space you have. just food for thought.
