Have you checked it for caterpillars? Did you bust open that area and look for them...or any kind of bug? That's the 1st thing I would check for.
There's a thread called budworm season...worth checking out.

I've also learned that a couple of frosts are good for her. Please, anybody, correct me if I'm wrong.
