I top first when they hit 5 nodes. Then I LST and top again as I think they need it. It depends on the strain and how they are performing. For me it is all about trial and error.

TBH, after yesterday I don't think I can recommend it. I have fungus gnats and the only place they can have come from is the compost. I had everything dialled in until this point, the loss of peat is like going back to square one.

Use a drop of dish soap in your water.
