I'd still PH the feed water with Pro Mix. It has lime in it to bring the PH of the peat up as peat is naturally very low ph. If you are feeding 1100ppm the ph of your feed will be very low. Catch any run off a test ppm and ph of that also.

If there's too much nutrients build up in the media then yes you'll have toxic salt level lowering the ph inside the media. Which then will cause calcium deficiency. Doing a run off test for ppm/etc and PH and knowing what PH he's feeding at would be a good start.
