I agree that 3 gal is too small...I run 5 for room sake but 7 is best...I on this last run...noticed it went smoother when I top dressed at 2 weeks instead of 3...I believe with the 3 gal you pass too much water across it...same with 5 as to why it is not available by week 3 and the plants are...
