I wonder if soaking the seeds in a seed sprout tea might help with old stock. SST's are full of hormones from what I've learned. Doing this might replace what's been lost over time. You might want to get ahold of Hyroot. He's big on sst's.

It's normal. Also your roots are fine like that. Some people let their roots be exposed on purpose. Their called "air roots" and add strength to the stalk of your plant.
