Stem was not chewed on but the skin (bark?) At/below the soil line was kinda peeling/loose, like it was wet for too long. So ya, the roots definetly drowned (don't think it was rot, just saturation and drowning....) Just surprised at the way it went down. I always thought you'd get some warning...
