makes sense. so basically just have the peat cube an inch or two above flood level so roots can reach water, but peat doesn't constantly stay wet.

Very useful info. Thank you. Tap PH here is 8.0, which has never affected growth before. So I think that's fine. Room temperature is ~75 with a humidity of ~20%. I gave them around 6-7 tablespoons per pot before I read your post. 1 quart pots. Pretty much just dampened the top of the soil.

The root rot was entirely my fault, on account of a simple mistake. In between crops, after sterilizing and cleaning the entire system, the timer switches got fucked up. Long story short, it was flooding and draining normally, except it accidentally got set to flood at 9pm, drain at 12am...
