Insulate? no, i grow the plants in rockwool instead of soil. You then feed them a medium strength hydroponic nutrient solution, and they grow almost twice as fast. :) More importantly, it simple to control the plants ph, water, air and feeding as you can flush the rockwool clean very easily.

You could always buy yourself a proper horticultural grow light. They are water-resistant, extremely reliable and a very low fire risk. With regards to your ballast, you should raise it off the carpet by using something heavy, and heat proof. (a brick or stone for example)

No, one plant cant spread it to another, but if all the plants are showing hermie traits then you must have light leaking into your grow area during the dark cycle.

i would personally take the ballast out of the plastic tub. Hot items and plastic dont mix. Other than that i would just ensure the light is securely fixed, and that the electrical sockets etc are safe and away from water. :)

no, you cant prevent hermies using chemicals. The best bet is to buy some decent genetics, then you are starting with lower risk plants. You only need to keep the plants warm for the first few weeks of life, after that lower temperatures wont do the plants any harm as long as its not proper cold.

I just received my Can Filter, as i had exactly the same problem. Waking up to a proper strong smell of widow when your in an apt. isnt that great. The one i got is some euro model by 'Prima Klima'. 24hrs after it was installed you cant smell a thing until you open the g/room door. Result!
