My nutrient line calls for weekly changes. I personally do bi weekly changes with "top offs" weekly bringing my PPM back into a desirable range. (Usually around 800 veg). You should be able to use the water for most other plants, I have and do and they seem to love it.

If you run a 100% synthetic rez you can go a little longer between changes. Perhaps use a little H2O2 to keep it sterile. If you use any organic based nutes (usually uses kelp, B1, humex's etc..) You would need to change every 7 days.

Newbie here so be kind :). I run a 100L res (well water and sterile) with 6 plants and for the first weeks of veg I could get away with 10-14 days with no topping up, I think LOL, never let it go that long. I run two rooms and the tray that is halfway through flower I top up on the 4th day, they really start to suck it up, and change every 7. I change both res's even if only one requires it, Im there. I have no water near the grow and have to string a hose, so its a pain BTW. I watch my nutes and PH, and can usually tell when its time to do something. If PH starts to drop I change res or top up as required. I'm pretty sure I could go longer if I topped up more and used RO water but i try to stay ahead of any issues and the nutes I use are cheap but work well.

Thanks for the replies.

Im using Ionic nutes. should i change 100% of the water and new nutes or just top up? I still seem to have plenty of water in the tray still.

What do you mean by 'res or rez'?

thanks again.

I changed all of the water, put new nutes in, and brought Ph down with a few drops, so the test water shows yellow now.
Fed old water to house plants

i changed the fibre matting aswell, do i need to do that?

thanks.

if your water is properly maintained (lightproofed) at the right temps, 65-75 with 60 being lowest and 75 being highest. i think that 70-72 is optimal for chemicals because i think 60-70 is optimal for microbial life, correct me if i'm wrong though. So yeah basically to tell if your water is OK you should already have air stones in the res yes? Well what i do is i pick up the stone and feel it, if it feels not slimy, then i think its still fine, although your goal is to change the water before it gets slimy because you dont wanna give your plants slime-water... to prevent slime also i hear pondzyme works well or theres more products like great white and whatever.. but for each you must learn how to use it correctly. Possibly you could cap your ebb and flow to reduce the amount of evaporation during floods, and light hitting the water, some people use that insulation reflective material and it blocks the light and reflects it back , thus increasing light concentration.
so my answer is try to change the water weekly, and thatll make up for those times where you forget to change it the 2nd week. Is your res big enough to handle 2 weeks? if it isn't you risk the res drying up and your pump burning out from no water.
also some people insulate their resevoirs, so all the heat from the day cycle doesnt heat the resevoir as much.
hope this helped!

I run 50gal res's on a 3 week change cycle and use organics and bennies with never a problem. I never add more nutes, and only in last stages of flower do i add more water because they are so big and take it so fast.
