1000 watt de hps with 7 foot ceilings?

Would I be ok running a 1000 watt de hps in a ac/de air cooled reflector with 7 foot ceilings? How much hotter do double ended run compared to single ended air cooled? if not how would a 750 watt de compare to a single ended 1000 watt hps?

I would avoid running DE's with such height restrictions. Not just because of heat but the lights are very intense and need to have some space between the plants and lights. I am all about my DE HPS lights, have a few... but they do make serious heat. Air cooling them may pull a little heat but you are also loosing around 10% of your light to the glass in the reflector.

If you kept a super low SoG setup you can get away with it but why have such restrictions. Honestly in that space I would toss some HLG 550 V2's in there. They are super thin, make less heat and will grow amazing weed with excellent yields. The fact that they are so thin will save you the height of the reflector. They will spread your light a little more evenly as well.

@DoubleAtotheRON has some nice grows journaled on here using the HLG 550's.

Another option that should be considered is growing with SE HPS hanging the bulbs vertically without a reflector. This method suits some of the lower ceiling grows well provided you like to grow larger "trees"

I run de 1kw hps in a 7ft room.

I know @Renfro is a very experienced and reputable grower around here, but my experience is differant.

I'm not saying that it may not be better to run them higher, but I have no experience in that, I've only ran them in my room.

I know everyone here says differantly... but I dont notice any differance at all in the plants burning more from a de 1kw bulb in a similarly sized se 1kw hps fixture.

I'd say right now my bulbs are 16 or so inches from my top colas, not ideal, but not a issue.

I truly dont get what everyone is on about pertaining to de hps needing so much freakin headroom because my experience just doesnt match up.


Edit, an to top it off my fixtures are on super lumens so they are pushing 1150 watts I believe...

I have my DE's nestled up between the floor joists in my basement, it's 8 feet to the bottom of my floor joists and my DE's only hang down about 2 inches except for a few that had plumbing in the way and those didn't really get any higher than the floor joists but they are right there with the hanger hardware up between the joists at least. I grow my plants really big. So if you just don't grow the plants as tall as I do then yeah it can be done. That said it's not ideal for sure. The whole point of the DE's is to cover more area but without hanging them higher above the canopy you can't do that.

I should note that I am moving towards LED down there, especially for the summer runs in my daytime flowering room.

I have a few hlg 600h fixtures and they are pretty good but I don't think they will outyield a double ended hps but I don't know cause I haven't tried one yet I might get one and put it in the corner and see how it does

Traditional.

Grow store guy told me I couldn’t run a DE fixture in a tent. So I did, I run massive ventilation in there so heat has never been an issue. Light spread would be be better with more headroom but it’s totally doable.

agree with growingforfun,i also just started using 1000w de hps and no problems just now as quite cold just now,got to admit they definately run hotter so get the environment dialled right in or they will fry as i dont think il be able to run it on full in summer until get bigger extraction and intake,i also have the bulb about 18 inchish away from top colas,did have closer but clear hot spots apearing on plant leaves so raised it,just need first grow to finish to see the difference in yields from 600w but from what i can see the buds are more dense.
