I try to maintain 16-20". Some strains will bleach out easier than others. A 1000 throws a ton of light, err on the higher side. If your in a tent or well reflective area, a few inches higher won't really matter.

I just fired up my 1000 and plan to keep it about a foot away but I'm using a light mover so it can be that close. Have it further back for now so the plants can get used to it. Whole lot of fresh seedlings just on their second day under the light so they are even further away.

from my humble experience i would say that the emphasis from many seems to be getting as close as possible to your plants, however from simple observation you will notice that the buds forming a little further down from the canopy produce trichomes in abundance from early in bloom right up to cropping.
i have a 1000w hps in a 1.2 x 2.4 tent and if i want reasonably even direct coverage i find that once stretch has slowed a good 60cm or 24 inches in old money.
don't grow massively big buds with all the trichomes deteriorated from heat be happy with just big buds with all the taste and kick left in play

I Place my 1000s about 16-20 inches. If i wanna stretch em a bit ill raise it up. Im doing a scrog so i dont worry about the lower buds getting a ton of light. Use the light line thats created by the hps on your walls to guide you. If your plants have shaded areas try raising it up a bit. I dont try to place it too close unless i got a mover tho. Heat is the concern when u put them too close you end up cooking the plant.

Hey. I am using a used light mover I picked up. I have been running about 11-14 inches from the tops but I have run out of headroom week 4 12/12 due to first time rdwc, first time strains and extended veg. I have moved the light to the max height and there is about 14-15 inches right now. Wondering how your 1kw did with running at 12"? Reason is that I could take apart and rig up something to bring it up another 5" but if I would be ok with buds not bleaching if they stretch any further?

That’s what I’m saying if they’re to close you’ll know by how it feels on your skin, and if they’re to close it will bleach them where as if if doesn’t feel uncomfortable it won’t....

At the first sign of bleaching then you should do something. Run the mover at top speed and have no pause at the ends so it's not in one place for more than a second or two.
If you have some tops that are taller either bend them out of the way or roll the stem a few inches down until it gets soft and the tops flop over. They'll grow fine.

These guys got you covered man just test with your hands. If you're not doing a scrog hang it up and let the girls grow .

When the big lights are A/C you can get close. If there's no bleaching then leave it be .........

With a sun system hood in a 4x5, most strains did well at 18-22", i could get some closer (dj's bd/green crack/dutch treat)
but for the most part, 18-22" kept everything safe in my environment.

Same I have a xxxl magnum old school 8” 1000w and believe it or not I can hang hps lower than my mh....right now I’m at 10” from tops in 4x8 tent I plan on lowering it little by little to force lowers to grow

I've got a horizontal de parabolic and a vertical parabolic reflector, the vertical orientation can get significantly closer than horizontal, vertical throws the heat out like a doughnut around the bulb, a horizontal also throws it out but in the direction of the plants, idk exactly what height atm I'd say 12/14" burning at 660w.
The vertical parabolic is the best reflector I've ever owned for heat and yeilds.
