1000w Overkill?

I think it's a total over kill. Light will have to be so far above so as not burn plants you would lose lumens. I think in a 3x6 area a 600 would work much better being you can get the light closer which mean more lumens.
Plants that are 2 feet away from light recieve 1/4th the amount of light recieved by plants one foot away. An HID the emits 100,000 lumens produces 25,000 lumens 2 feet away. A 1000 watt hid that emits 100,000 lumens yeilds 11,111 lumens at three feet away.

I would go with the 1000 watts as long as you have good air circulation in your grow area. If you were worried about heat and getting your light close enough, then a cool tube or an air-cooled hood would easily take care of that problem. Even a fan blowing over the top of your canopy would work quite well at dissipating heat and allow you to lower your lights. My 1000 watts are 10 inches from the plant directly under it and I have never had a burn on them. The issue isn't how low you can go over your plants as much as how high do you need to be to cover outwards of 6 feet to get good light penetration to the plants farthest away. A light mover would help to keep the lights low over your plants while still having adequate lighting to light the outside plants however without it, then a 1000 watts would be your best bet for full adequate light coverage over your grow area.
