ive got a air cooled 1000w hps in my grow cab, the glass on the light and everything close is hot, my question is how far above the plants can my light be while keeping optimal light for the plant? im working on running more air tru my light to see if i can keep it cooler but can anybody tell this newbe what the rule of thumb for is distance of light from plants

Sure,

Rule of thumb is, put your hand over the top of your plant. feel the heat from the light on the back of your hand?
If it is uncomfortable to you it too close.

You might like this better



You can cool a light to the point where it is cool to the touch but
if the light is too close it will fry the buds without heat.
