1st Time Test Plot, Water Question

I realize it's way late, but I want to kind of get an idea of what I'm up against for future reference next year. I've got 6 seeds germinating as we speak, and plan to plant them this weekend. If I really can't afford to come water them and routinely check on them except MAYBE every weekend, at best, can I plant them next to a creek or large stream and hope that they water themselves? If so, how far away from the water should I plant them? Again, I know it's late and 6 seeds isn't really worth it, but I'm just kind of getting my feet wet with growing my own weed so I can buy a bunch of dank seed next year or maybe this fall at college and then I'll at least have an idea of what the hell I'm doing.
