Hey all, newbie here from Australia.. tried growing a few times to never be completed.. really want to get it done this season as it is just starting now.
I managed to get 10 apparent white russian seeds from a friend of a friend at the beginning of this month. I started germinating them on the 2nd of september, and 7 out of 10 were germinated by the 4th. All 10 of these (including the ones that were not fully germinated yet) were planted in pots in a greenhouse in the bush on the 4th. I then came back to check a week later finding that about 6 had only just popped out of the soil and the others were close. The greenhouse was left all the way down and felt too hot so i opened it up a little bit for some air flow. A week later I came back again to find that they had only grown a tiny amount and that it was still pretty hot in the greenhouse so opened it up even more. 7 of the plants were out of the soil, with two looking nearly dead and burnt, the others looking okay but still quite small. They were probably a little bit less than an inch tall with only the one set of begininng leaves. Watered them again (this was lest wednesday the 16th), brought the two nearly dead looking ones back with me. One has recovered a bit more and the other is dead. Went back to the spot today. They had grown a bit more with a couple extra nodes it seemed like close togethor, but they are only about an inch or so tall.
I had decided that it was not feasible having the babies in the bush and brought them all back home to put on my balcony(so 6 seedlings and going to be getting some more going soon hopefully). I think that they had such a slow growth rate because they were not being watered enough (once a week) and also the first two weeks was too hot and too much direct sunlight for the babies in the greenhouse.
I got some pictures to see what you guys think.. (not very good quality) i believe that now they will have much more care they will begin to grow faster and be able to put in a the bush when stronger. The downside of these plants is that they are really small for nearly 3 weeks, but besides that i think they look quite healthy besides a few burns, and have not stretched really at all. But could this slow start and stuff be bad for the plant and give it long term damage or something?.. also im going to buy some nutrients to give them just heaps lightly for a little boost.. anyone got some suggestions?
Also, when i went to the spot last week i had a bag of potting mix aobut 50 metres away from where i had the holes dug for the plants. I discovered that this bag of potting mix had been chomped through and made a nice environment for literally hundreds of termites. So i guess that is that spot destroyed.. I don't think it is real worth it trying to grow there if its filled with termites.. especially after reading the termite thread. This is dissapointing because this spot was really good getting lots of sunlight.. close to a water source, out of the way.
cheers
