250w or 400w HPS?

I need to get a HPS light for my 3' x 2' x 6' grow space. I'm assuming 250w is the more logical choice but 400w is cheaper for some reason than 250w. I don't want to make my room super hot though, so should I just pay extra for the 250w? Seems like I should get the 400w. Thanks.

I just order the 400 HPS with MH conversion bulb today. My closet is 2x6x8 with 3 cfl, 2 2' flur and the temp 80 day 75 night. How much hotter do you think it will get with just the 400W?

Ok. Do you have any suggestions, fdd, since I have your attention, of venting a small apartment closet? The closet is one of the first things you see when you walk into my apartment but there is a small table in front of it and I tell people I just use it for storage. In the back of the closet is the opposite wall of my room and on the right side of the closet connects my room's closet. I have holes drilled in that wall to run the cords to a surge protector in my closet and out the other side of the wall to the living room behind the couch. I'm going to place the ballast in my room closet as well to keep the temperatures down.

i'd cut a nice round hole in the ceiling and vent into the attic. if there is an attic. save the circle you cut out to put back later if need be.

yeah... no idea if there's an attic... hopefully won't make a skylight... rofl

The exact dimensions of the grow space are 24"D x 30"W x 66"H, with about 25.5" of extra space from the shelf to the ceiling. It appears the closet height must have some extra attic space above it because I have vaulted ceilings and the ceiling is much higher outside the closet. So cutting an exhaust hole with a fan right below it is very possible. What do you think about this? High Tech Garden Supply

IMO it will never work. Think at least 6" since you will likely be venting a reflector one day. If you are not venting the reflector I would suggest a 6" exhaust and at least an 8" intake. If you do vent the reflector you could be cheap on the exhaust, likely even get away with a passive intake at 8-12".

Could you break this down just a bit further for me? I'm not super new but I'm no expert on ventilation yet. Why would this fan not be a good idea? It will not be the only fan in the space; are you saying it doesn't push out enough cfm for the space? I'll most likely be getting this light: High Tech Garden Supply thanks!

I am VERY new as well but have been battling temps since day one. I would suggest a 2nd opinion on anything you get from me.

If you HAD to use the system above I would suggest at least a 6" exhaust hole on one upper side of the room with a fan of some sort. On the other side I would have an 8" intake fan of some sort. Maybe neccessary somewhat close to the intake area have to have a box fan to blow the air across the lit area.

Please note when I say "fan of some sort" I am referring to products like the Suncourt you linked to. Another individual here referred to them as boosters and they are just that. They will not provide the cool air you need in a 4" or 6" size to compensate for a lamp that is not enclosed. You could of course go with a 4" or 6" intake if you had a better fan.

You might want to consider an enclosed reflector. Good luck

that 400 hps is kind of risky. i had a closet amost with the same demensions(28''*25''*6') with a 250 hps from htg supply and i had hell keepin the temp down. it was 90+ degrees in there witha circulating fan in there. i had 2 buy a small inline fan with ducting an suck cold air from outside to get the temp to 82 degrees. the area is to small to put a air hood there. if it was summer i wouldnt be able to grow in there, it would be 2 hot. the only thing that saved me was the cold air from outside sucking it in threw the fan. my opion, i would go with the 250hps only because of the heat problem, but if you could work out a system that can work with that 400 hps, go with it.

A i got a saying i just thought of, more watts,more buds to hott yah fucked!
