2x23W Spherical Scrog

Thanks Blaze. Can you put up a link to your post because I just looked through yours and I can't find it. I thought it was my own invention, taken from mixing scrogging and vertical grow techniques.
I am only using CFL as I want to experiment before doing it on a larger scale as I couldn't find anyone who had done it before although I must be wrong. It seems such an obvious and logical thing to try.
I've worked out it gives me a screen surface area of about 2.5ft square in a cabinet 2ft square, with the added advantage that all the screen (8" diameter 'ball', 2" diameter bulb) is within 3" of the bulb.

Interesting idea, I think you're gonna need more light though than 2 23W's. I'd think about upgrading it to 42 or 65.

Cheers Cranker. I am looking at maybe going to 2x42W 3500K for flower. Just going to be hard to change bulbs when it comes to flowering time! Also will need a PC fan and DIY carbon scrubber later on.
Maybe also a small diy yeast/sugar Co2 generator on a passive intake. At the moment, my venting involves leaving a door open! However, at the moment, temps don't seem to be an issue, even with doors closed. More worried about Co2 exchange. It is getting colder here in the UK now.
Still, I only knocked this up yesterday so probably lots of refinement needed yet!
Not expecting it to take off quickly as I only put 2 newly rooted clones of Violator Kush in that are only just showing roots out of the Root-Riot cubes, so on 1/4 Nutes that are mixed up of a few things I had lying around (bit of Canna aqua flores, some houseplant fert with some micro nutes to make up the N and a pinch of Epsom salts to make up for the lack of Mg and Su in the houseplant fert!)
All in all, if I get an Oz, that'll do. If I get 2, I may look at doing something similar with my HPS system.

Cabinet looks similar but the grow style is very different (the sphere, plus, I am on hydro, you are soil). Will have a look at yours and put my comments in though.

what strain is it?
Barneys farm Violator Kush. 2 Clones taken from a female my mate keeps as a houseplant at his house! Short, squat, close branching, bushy and only covers 2ft wide x 2ft high when grown naturally. Figured it would fit perfectly (circumference of each globe is around 2ft). Also doesn't seem to need too much light. I vegged 4 under a 4x4 flat scrog under a 250w MH once and it grew right up to the edges with no worries. Got 500g (VERY dry, I don't sell my stuff so the less weight I can get caught with the better) after flowering under my 600 HPS plus made a marble-sized ball of Butane Honey Oil out of the trim that got me and a mate in our worst state ever for a long weekend! We literally spent 3 days laughing at each other about nothing!
Only bad thing I have to say about this variety is it stinks to high heaven!

is that gonna be enough light ? not knocking it m8 just switched to cfl myself and mines like 400x's the size of those , i wish it were small lol

CFL's are tricky. They are really good as long as you can keep them close. I like the idea though, I'm subbed and following. Are you gonna tie any down so they go to the other side of the spheres before letting them grow up?

Aiming to do pretty much what I do with flat scrogs. Will train them around the sphere, let it get to 60% of coverage before 12/12 (seems about right for VK), then keep pulling it out of the screen until 2 weeks into flower then let it grow inwards through the screen and closer to the light. May use some twist-ties if needed, even pulling buds out if they get too close. Used 1" hole poultry netting to give me more control over bud spacing. Under HPS I always used 2" holes. Guessing at 5 weeks of veg but this is my first time with CFL so it's all experimental. (i.e. I don't know what I'm doing!) Figure it won't grow too much vertically as the bulbs are in the middle and it's not in the nature of this strain. Aiming for an even coverage around the spheres.

OTB, if yours is 400x the output of mine, why use CFL? My 600w HPS puts out 300x (90,000 lumens as opposed to less than 3000 with this set-up) using about 13x the electricity. That's not the point of this experiment. If, however, you mean (as stated) that it is 400x the size, where did you find CFL's that are 7 foot long and wide? No offence meant!

Well, after a couple of days, the first difference I've noticed is the lack of heat. Min/max thermometer has stayed between 55 and 75 despite my playing with doors open and closed (am running lights off for 7 hours at night due to g/f not being able to sleep with any light) On the plus side, it's a revelation after having to use loud 6" ruck fans for HPS. On the minus side, I will worry about Co2 levels dropping. Not worried yet as the babies won't be growing until they get used to their new surroundings but I think it will have to be addressed soon.
Does anyone know of a cheap and readily available source of Calcium nitrate? i.e. some type of freshmints etc? It's all that's missing from a cheap fertiliser I can get hold of (apart from Magnesium and Sulphur for which I use Epsom Salts)

I've seen something like this before...This guy would surround individual cfl's with mesh so he can place them directly into the canopy without fear of burning his girls!

Sorry Blazed, misunderstood. Apologies.
SLB, that sounds very similar. I've since seen an article (lost the link, sorry) from someone who has done this on a larger scale (think he was using MH) but went one better. His Sphere was split into 2 halves so that it could be opened up for maintenance / or to increase distance from plants. I was thinking if I ever go down that route, I would take it further and split it into 4's.
I was gutted. A similar thing happened to me at Uni where I came out with the idea of a Hydroponic Golf green. Unfortunately, when I started researching it, I found out it had already been done!
This morning's modification involved wrapping some old socks around the edge of the Res to keep the light out of it!
It's Kinda fun getting back to basics. My last proper grow was a complete headache. Stealth loft grow through winter in a commercial building I ran. Had to build false walls, insulate the roof (lots of people grow around here and the police helicopters search for it), carry gallons of water up a ladder through a tiny hidden entrance and all that C*@p!. Still, at least I wasn't paying the electric bill with my own money!

Yeah, but I intend to wait until flowering for that and see if I can get some cheap 42W 3500K or similar.
