what is the ideal coverage with a 400 watt hps?

i was hoping to have a table 5' x 4'

is this possible?

No.

At best you can stretch a 400w over a canopy of around 3.5ftx3.5ft.

If you wanted to just cover a 5x4 footprint then a 600w could just do it but ideally you'd need either a single 1000w or 2x400w.

Jondamon didn't say 3.5 ft. x 3.5 ft. was optimal, he said that was the maximum space you could hope to cover. There's a big difference!

I'm a little more conservative - I would say 3 ft. x 3 ft. max.

If I had that area to work with I would get a 3x3' tray, make the area square and try to leave some room so you can access plants when theyre in full bloom.

If I had that area to work with I'd get a 3x3 tray, get 4 good plants under there and scrog 'em up nice.
