400 watt MH lamp light casting question

I just bought a 400 watt mh/hps lamp and am vegging under it now. It seems that the bulb is casting a lot of shadows due to the inner elements of the bulb and is way brighter on some areas than others. Is this normal or does the bulb have problems. Otherwise, it seems to work fine. Do these "shadowy" areas lessen the effectiveness of growth on those plants it hits? Thanks for the input all....

It shouldn't be a problem, but if you are concerned, move the plants around.

I have 9 plants in a square, and my light is most intense in the center of my tent, so I just rotate them all clockwise every night and it seems to be working really well so far
