400watt hps vs mh

What would be better to veg?

I really cant afford a 600 watt mh right now, but i need to start vegging under more lumens than i am right now. Thats why im torn between what to buy. The 400 watt hps produces 55,000 lumens, while the argomax 400 watt mh produces 38,000 with a 6500K rating.

should i go with more lumens or go with a better spectrum and less lumens?

the agromax bulb is at a good veg, but it doesn't have a great spectrum for flowering, you can get mh lights that are down in the 4500 -5000k range

Well i just finished my google searching and i found that it is better to use the MH over the HPS. basically the hps will produce more light but its not really going to be of use to me in vegging, so the 6500 spectrum Mh is going to be alot better for vegging.

Thanks for your reply man ;)

Great to know this!

I was thinking of getting an HPS, but I dunno about now...

Does anyone know if it would be better to just get an HPS and then an MH later to veg, or budget myself and just get an MH? Would it be just as good for vegging?

Thanks!

I use a Philips Son Agro 430W HPS... it has 30% more blue spect. so is good for veg... 54,000 lumen...

I use a 400 watt MH for veg as well and it works great. The vegging plants love the spike in blue spectrum that the MH provides. How long do you intend to veg indoors before they head outside?

If you plan to have only one light and you plan to grow during the winter, I would go with the HPS and the Sun Agro 430Watt. However, if you never plan to do any growing in the winter and only use indoor lighting for veg, then the MH is you better choice. For me, the better choice is HPS if I only had to have one light. I have vegged using a HPS and it does work quite well, compared to a CFL. In addition, I have found that MH ballasts and bulbs are fairly cheap used on craigslist and HPS's are harder to find and come by if I wanted to use a second light and grow area later.
