5x5 passive intake grow tent design question.

hey guys, can you look at my diagram and tell me if my math is ok, using a 4inch 175 cfm fan/4 inch ducting, and a 600 watt hid the tent in question is 5x5x6.5
I know i'd be safe with a 6 inch, but i already have a 4 inch,id like to utilize what i got
also, for a passive intake, is 4 inch out 4 inch in good, or should i use a different size for out/in?

Just curious, Shouldn't that fan be between the carbon scrubber and the light? I thought that sucking hot air from the light, through your fan will decrease the life span of the fan's motor. Perhaps you have your reasons to place it that way.
Another thought, I have a 3' x 3' tray and I have a 600w hps, I could get away with a higher wattage. Is 600w a good enough size for a 5x5? I would suggest some supplemental lights for flowering.
The math from my understanding isn't what I thought it should be, I'm probably wrong, but the air should be changed every 5 minutes. Here's my calculation: 5x5x6.5= 162cf. 162cf / 5minutes =32.4cfm not 54cfm, you have plenty of power in that fan to cool your light and move the air in your grow space. You might want to put a fan controller in there, so you don't have too much negative pressure that potentially sucks in more dust, spores and bugs. Get a nice intake filter and that should take care of that. Have fun with your grow.

My math was for changing the air every 3 minutes, not 5. But if it is indeed every 5 minutes, that gives me some wiggle room. Yes, I believe I could get away with a 1000 watt light in that space, but I already have a 600 watt mh/hps light. What do you suggest i supplement it with, some t5s? LEDs maybe?

About the light, I don't know what you're willing to spend, but everyone here seems to be going LED. I have a little experience w/ those and it was expensive and not that great. If you are going for more light, the LEDs have some great penetration, the problem is they have a tendency to heat up quite a bit and that leads to failure of the components, not to mention heating up the girl's environment. If you're into building your own, you can control the quality of heat dissipation and I'm sure that would be better than what is available from manufacturers.

I do use T5s for my seedlings and clones. I veg and start my flower w/ my inda-gro420 and finish w/ my 600w hps. I've supplemented my inda-gro420 w/ a couple of 150w HPSs, that I had around, and that really improved my girls' productivity. That was before I got the big hood and 600w HPS.

Since you have a bigger footprint than I, a less expensive route could be a light rail. That would get you the coverage you'd like as well as the ability to get the light closer and more penetrating.

If you want to keep it simple go with the t5s. Use the 6500k lights for seedlings through veg. The truer whites and blues will help develop early development, growth and nodal spacing. Then start switching to the 2700k lights during flower. The more red light will help out with the flowering. I'm pretty sure you can get away w/ the 600w light all the way through, but if you want to get the most, out of your time as well as the girls' lives, get more coverage or power on that grow. Most importantly, enjoy the entire experience.

Hey Warble, Thank you for all this useful information! A few years back, i tried my hand at building my own diy grow light, using 660nm red and 440nm blue 1 watt leds. It was bright, but led to light airy popcorn nugs. Check out this link for my youtube build. I think that now that I have my 600watt, if i setup some leds along the walls of the tent to supplement , the ladies will respond well to the extra light. I think i'm just gonna go ahead and buy a few led strips and see where it goes :)

That is a nice build. Probably would do well as supplemental for flowering, w/ those 660nm reds. Does it really pull 115 watts? Pretty bright for that much wattage. I noticed the DIY builds on here lately use the Cree or Vero LEDs that are very hot. I say rock w/ what you have until you feel a need coming up, save up for those lights, then learn how to best use what you have and apply that knowledge to the next cycle. It just keeps getting better and better.
When I see an LED build that can last a couple of years, like my inda-gro, I'll try my hand at putting together a 3x3 HO LED grid. I've built quite a few hundred telecom chassis for the government, I think I could do a pretty good job for my own grow. Lights, heat sinks, drivers and fans being built in my garage, would be much easier than putting together some super heavy chassis in a filthy boat. I would just like the reliability of the LEDs to be a bit better before I give it a try. I just cannot justify spending $400 on parts, if its only going to last two or three flower cycles.
I'm sure your ladies will do fine, under 600 watts. That's my biggest light and it works fine for me.
